A month ago, I was fretting myself into a nervous wreck over the UTW launch, finishing the filming just three days before the premiere. I spent the final night before each video went live dotting the last i’s and crossing the last t’s. (Often literally, as adding the subtitles in English and Spanish is my last task before publishing.)

I’m pleased to report that I’m no longer fretting over the UTW launch.

To recap: our first objective as UTW is to ratify the No Confidence Amendment, which will serve as a reset for the United States Federal Government. The initial six articles, from “There’s Gotta Be A Pony Somewhere” to “You Are Not Alone”, describe what No Confidence entails and outline our overarching strategy. I published these six daily from June 29 to July 4.

I’m actually going to go back a bit further than that to start, though.

The Origins of No Confidence

When I initially drafted the No Confidence Amendment, it was more of a joke. Not because it was poorly made—though, in hindsight, it was laughably incomplete—but because I wasn’t genuinely serious about it. It was late 2025, and I was overwhelmed with anger, and I wanted to rip and tear the power away from these terrible leaders with no real understanding of what it truly means to be American.

It was one of a pair; the other amendment I drafted was called No Kings, which provided more punishment to the expelled politicians than No Confidence did and does. The No Kings Amendment was little more than a revenge fantasy, but as I said, I was angry.

It was all just a fantasy, honestly. I had always stayed away from politics. When I mention the “silent majority” in America, that was me a year ago. (That’s why I’m not well-known.)

I couldn’t get No Confidence out of my head, though. I knew it was unlikely that it could ever be ratified, but I follow a personal rule: I’m not allowed to declare a task “impossible” until after I’ve given it at least one good honest try myself.

A Good Honest Try

So I put some effort into it. I cleaned up my rough draft. I emailed my state representative, which was probably the first time I’ve done that in my life. I was quite surprised when he responded immediately to arrange a meeting.

Something I never knew about political meetings: they’re never with just one person. In the corporate world, if two names are on a meeting list, then two people will be in the room (or on the Zoom). However, my meeting with my state legislator also included his aide and a part-time intern taking notes, and that was totally fine.

It’s not like I write UTW as a one-on-one dialogue because I get uncomfortable speaking to crowds or anything like that.

My friend, I expected the part where he told me he couldn’t personally help me with a Constitutional Amendment at that moment. What surprised me was when he added, “…but let me get you some contact details for our district’s Representative in the House.”

I don’t get to claim something is impossible until I’ve given it a good honest try. I scheduled a meeting.

I wasn’t caught off-guard by the additional people in the room this time. And this time, I was paying closer attention. When they said, “We can’t help you,” I couldn’t shake the feeling like what they truly meant was exactly that: “We can’t help you.”

Not “won’t”. Can’t. That part is very similar to a lesson I learned in the corporate world, the rule of the status quo: those with power have little freedom, and those with freedom have little power.

Nothing I saw in those rooms suggested that any of those people wouldn’t jump at a real opportunity to challenge the current status quo. What I saw was that they simply could not risk it in the present political climate, certainly not without having any sort of assurance that it was what America truly wanted.

But there is another way to make a difference in America, isn’t there? It’s rare, but sometimes a grassroots movement hits the perfect tone for the moment, and suddenly it’s all anyone is talking about.

It’s a laughable idea. You can’t plan for popularity any more than you can plan to win the lottery. And if anyone could do it, it wouldn’t be someone like me. It was essentially impossible.

I just wasn’t allowed to call it completely impossible. Unless.

Striking the Right Note

I registered the domain unfuckingtheworld.org on April 6.

The name is an homage to a blog I followed some time ago called Unfuck Your Habitat, or UfYH. Before I discovered UfYH, I never considered cleaning worthwhile unless I had the time and energy to do it properly. After all, if you clean your room but it’s still messy afterward, you can’t really be said to have cleaned it, can you?

It shouldn’t have been such an epiphany to be told, “if your living space is a complete disaster, addressing only the worst bits until it’s only an utter mess is an improvement,” but it really was. The idea of to unfuck has been enshrined for me ever since as, “to tackle the most urgent and severe issues first, creating space to deal with everything else.”

(And when I was a young adult utterly failing to keep my living space under control, it didn’t really seem fitting to use a verb as gentle as “clean” or “tidy” for what felt more like an excavation project.)

Right now, that’s all I really want. I’m no politician. I’m not trying to join the debate over what the very best solutions are. I just want us all to stop yelling at each other long enough to put the fire out before the whole house burns down.

My plan was that I’d put those first six articles out, they’d go relatively unnoticed, and then I could quietly take myself back off the Internet. I could then convince myself that I’d done literally everything possible, after which I could abandon the No Confidence idea and go back to writing my novel.

In order to say that I’d given it an honest try, though, I had to pull out all the stops. I commissioned a gorgeous website which now lives at UTW.vote, since I have very little design sense to speak of. I have little audio and no video experience, so the podcast and video versions of UTW are professionally-done too.

Ultimately, if UTW fails, I don’t ever want to wonder, “but what if I’d also tried…?”

This means I’m also purchasing ads to spread the word. During launch week, I mainly bought text ads on Google and Facebook. Now that UTW is in video form too, I’ve begun creating short teaser videos for every new article, each around a minute long, with no profanity to make them easier to share and suitable for advertising.

I didn’t realize at the time just how useful that would become later.

The Quietest Echo

It’s not an ideal time to be involved in American politics, is it? We’re all feeling afraid, partly because we know that the law no longer offers protection. The modern era also provides other dangers that come with speaking out online on any topic, threatening employment, housing, and other critical necessities.

Part of this is also because so much data is constantly being gathered about us. A comment on YouTube can get harvested for intent and then sold to you as a product on Etsy the very same day. We have all become more cautious about what information we reveal about ourselves online.

I don’t receive many public comments on UTW articles so far, but that doesn’t imply the message isn’t resonating.

Did you know that when you watch a video online, the creator can see which parts you skipped over or replayed? Not you personally, but the audience as a whole. It’s called audience retention, usually shown as a line graph indicating how many viewers are still watching at any given point in the video.

Since this was all quite new to me, I had no basis for comparison when I told my friend how nice it was that about a quarter of my audience watched through to the outro of each video. I assumed 25% was likely on the low side. After all, why bother clicking on a video if you’re not going to watch it through to the end?

My friend informed me that for new channels nobody knows about, the typical retention rate for long-form videos is about 5%.

The retention graph for each UTW video looks similar: a swift decline at the start, as viewers decide whether or not to continue watching, followed by a relatively flat line for the rest of the video. Those who stay for more than a minute or two generally watch until the end. Apparently, in the world of online video, this is Doing Numbers.

It still doesn’t sound impressive though, does it? After all, these are people who clicked on the video—whether by accident or intentionally—and only one in four chose to watch all the way through. Then again, I have certainly ever decided that 10 minutes is just a little more time than I want to spend watching a video essay, even if I enjoy the presenter. There are countless reasons to choose to watch or skip a video.

Then I started getting numbers back on the ads.

The UTW teasers are appearing as preroll ads on YouTube and elsewhere, and the retention rates (called “view-through rates” in the ad industry) are astonishing even to me. Approximately 60% of viewers are watching the full minute-long ad instead of skipping after six seconds.

They’re all performing like that; all but one of them, in which I ask the viewer to avoid thinking of other Americans as their enemies. That was apparently quite an unpopular point of view; only four of every ten viewers kept watching through to the end, not six. Bad news for anyone whose religion teaches “love thy enemies”, I suppose.

Growth Curves

I’m not naïve enough to think that a movement can be built solely on advertising. For one thing, I don’t have unlimited funds. I’m just one person. More crucially, though, advertising offers diminishing returns. There’s a limited pool of people I can reach through ads, and the longer they run, the higher the chance that people will have already seen them.

That’s okay. The ads are just a stopgap measure anyway; they’re wildly ineffective compared with personal recommendations. Substack doesn’t have paid ads the way Facebook and YouTube do; that’s one of the reasons I chose it for UTW in the first place.

That has made my subscriber count extremely predictable. When I have the energy for social media, and I post or comment about UTW, it gains more subscribers. On days when I don’t, it generally doesn’t.

You can practically track the amount of spare energy I had for interaction over the past few months by looking at the Substack subscriber curve. Before the launch, I was promoting UTW every day—through comments, in person, in DMs. Not a single day went by without UTW gaining at least one new subscriber, averaging to about three new subscribers per day.

Once launch week began on June 29, all my energy went to ensuring each article and episode was published on schedule. I had nothing left for promotion, and so UTW stopped attracting new subscribers until the July 4 conclusion. Afterward, I spent a few more days talking up UTW—but with all the content now available, the same effort gained new subscribers at a rate of around ten per day.

(Then I fell over for a few weeks, because I’d been burning the candle at both ends for three months straight.)

That’s what happens when only one person promotes UTW, and that actually hasn’t been the case for a little while now. I get a notification whenever someone links to a UTW article, and the new subscriber notification doesn’t generally take long to follow.

In my own experience and from watching others, it’s really easy to get people excited about UTW in one-on-one interactions. As more people learn about UTW, there will be more people willing to talk about it, both in public and in private. As the number of subscribers goes up, the rate of new subscribers will increase as well, in the social media equivalent of compound interest.

That means that, while it’s likely to keep being overshadowed by my own networking and advertising efforts for a few weeks yet still, UTW’s subscriber count is now beginning to exhibit an exponential growth curve.

So that’s pretty neat.

Next Time

I hope this encourages you to share the message, my friend. Just keep in mind: about 60% of Americans who see me discuss removing our government voluntarily prefer to keep listening to me rather than switch to what they were going to watch, when given the choice. This isn’t limited to just one political party.

The second most common reaction I get when I tell people about No Confidence is skepticism, and quite reasonably so. (After all, if it amending the US Constitution were easy, we wouldn’t have the problems we have today; we would instead have completely different problems.) If you’ve been spreading the word yourself, you’ve probably had more than a couple of people scoff at how unlikely it is that we could amend the Constitution in the modern era.

They aren’t wrong to be skeptical. The Constitution currently has 27 amendments, and the last time we ratified one was in 1992. However, the last time we proposed and ratified an amendment was in 1971.

(Yes, that is a weird discrepancy. Yes, I’ll explain shortly.)

Before I can tell you what the skeptics are missing, though, you need to understand the scale of the task ahead of us, and why they’re entirely right to be skeptical.

The Problem

The United States Constitution is one of the oldest written constitutions in the world that remains in force today. It’s also among the least amended.

In the 237 years it’s been in force, the Constitution has been amended only 27 times. Meanwhile, over half the state constitutions are similarly old, having been in force since before the 20th century, and on average they have more than 150 amendments each. As historian Jill Lepore writes:

“[A]round the world, written constitutions turn out to have lasted, on average, only seventeen years before being scrapped. Not the U.S. Constitution. It’s lasted more than two hundred years and hasn’t been amended in any meaningful way since 1971, more than half a century ago.

“Laws govern people; constitutions govern governments. Lately, American democracy has begun to wobble, leaning on a constitution that’s grown brittle.”

(If the name Jill Lepore sounds familiar, it’s probably because her history of the Constitution, We The People, won her the Pulitzer this year.)

The last time the US Constitution was amended, cellphones didn’t exist. The word “text” was a noun, Nokia wouldn’t start making bricks for another decade, and the Internet wasn’t even a twinkle in Al Gore’s eye. It’s not that the world hasn’t changed enough in the intervening time to warrant changing the rules that govern our government. So why haven’t we?

The United States Constitution is notoriously difficult to amend. It requires a two-thirds majority in either Congress or the States to propose an amendment, and ratification by a three-quarters majority of either the States or their citizens.

You already know the rest of the story.

The United States of the 21st century is divided down the middle, half-and-half. Every issue that someone might want an amendment on falls under the purview of either the Democratic Party or the Republican Party, and thus about half the states and about half the Congresspeople will refuse to even consider proposing or ratifying it. The result is stark. From the last chapter in We The People:

“Members of Congress had proposed more than twenty-one hundred constitutional amendments between 1980 and 2020. Congress, more polarized with each passing year, approved none. In roughly that same stretch of time, state legislatures introduced almost five thousand amendments and passed nearly four thousand.”

The will of the people is clearly to amend our constitutions, but the US Constitution has such a high bar for ratification that we haven’t managed to do so ever since our nation became so starkly divided.

The Exception

So what about 1992? That was the year the 27th Amendment was ratified. Why doesn’t it count as “amending the Constitution in a meaningful way”?

The 27th Amendment, known as the Congressional Pay Amendment, is straightforward: it says that if Congress passes a law to give itself a pay increase, that raise can’t take effect until after the next election. In other words, the voters have a chance to make their displeasure known before Congress gets to see a dollar.

Pretty obvious, right? The reason it isn’t a “meaningful” change is that even though it was ratified in 1992, it was proposed in 1789.

No, that’s not a typo. The Congressional Pay Amendment was part of the original Bill of Rights proposed by the first Congress, it just didn’t get ratified at the same time as the ten most popular. That first Congress didn’t set a time limit for ratification, as all the more recent ones have, so it could be ratified even today, despite being two centuries old.

That was what Gregory Watson of the University of Texas wrote, at least in a sophomore paper for his poli sci course, back in 1982.

He got a C.

Determined to redeem himself, Watson began a one-man campaign to increase the number of ratifications of the amendment from seven, three short of the ten it would have required at our nation’s founding, to the 38 required by a 50-state US.

It took him ten years of writing, faxing, and calling state legislators around the country, but on May 5, 1992, when Alabama became the 38th state to ratify the Congressional Pay Amendment, making it the 27th Amendment to our Constitution, he proved himself right.

What Greg Watson understood was that politics is the stories we tell each other. It isn’t merely the laws we write or the cases we decide in court. Rather, politics is the outward expression of a nation’s desire to live in peace and stability.

It wasn’t just that three-quarters of the United States ratified the Congressional Pay Amendment.

It was that one single American citizen had spent ten years of his life and thousands of dollars of his own money because he believed in a simple truth: the rest of us don’t get to write our own paychecks, so Congress shouldn’t either.

Maine went first, ratifying it in 1983.

Colorado next, in ‘84.

Then, in 1985, five states ratified it. Not a single year passed between then and 1992 without at least one more state joining the list. As more and more states joined, the public began to take notice.

It wasn’t just a few local-interest stories anymore. By 1992, it was national news. This wasn’t just a piece of legislation; it was the triumphant conclusion of a decade-long campaign against a Congress that, even as of 1991, was still giving itself pay raises.

As for Watson: his professor later submitted a grade-change form, officially changing his grade to an A+. It’s the only one the University of Texas has issued—their usual scale only goes up to an A.

The Lesson

Politics is not a machine. You can’t simply drop 38 ratifications into the coin slot and expect an amendment to pop out.

Politics is the stories we tell one another.

The story of the 27^th Amendment tells us what we need to know: if we follow the Constitution’s letter and the American public believes in what we’re doing, the Constitution will change.

A Story of Our Future

I’d like to tell you a story now, a story about a future that might not come to pass, but that isn’t so far outside the realm of credibility.

A week or so after you read this article, a news story breaks. The government is covering up the murders of more and more American citizens. You go on Facebook, and a friend of yours is freaking the fuck out. She thinks she’s gonna die, that they’re all after her, that it’s just a matter of time, that there’s no way out.

She’s lashing out at people in the comments, too. Your mutuals are trying to talk her down, but reasoning with her isn’t helping, and neither is comforting her. She just can’t be calmed, and you’re not about to try to get your face bitten off.

Then you remember what I wrote last time in “How You Can Help”. She is your friend, after all, so you decide it’s worth a try. You copy and paste the last example I gave directly into a reply:

“Yeah, it’s true, things are really awful right now. I’ve been listening to a podcast called Unf*cking The World, and it’s been giving me hope that we’ve got a way out of this.”

Around half an hour later, you get a notification that she liked your comment. You check back in to find she hasn’t replied to anyone else since you posted it. She still hasn’t responded to any offers of advice, help, or comfort, but at least she’s not snapping at anyone anymore. Progress.

The next day, you wake up to find she’s started posting links to UTW videos everywhere across all her socials. She’s finally turned off the caps lock, though, so it’s a definite improvement.

You go back to your day, but you do occasionally respond to things you see online when you happen to see them. Mostly it’s just copy-and-paste, but every once in a while you’ll write a new one and add it to the text file you’ve got sitting on your desktop.

It’s October when the news comes: the war is heating up, and the elections will have to be postponed, with the date TBD. Your social media is a flood of doom from every direction (except for your friend from earlier, but everyone is basically used to her posting UTW links these days, with varying levels of exclamation points).

You throw out a couple of your copy-and-paste comments to lift some spirits, but it’s not doing much against all the screaming. You make one grumpy post before logging out: “If y’all are really this upset, you could do something about it. UTW.vote, just saying.”

Your post gets way more likes than you’re used to, so you mute it. You do re-share it every time another big news story breaks, though, and it gets another couple hundred likes. That’s pretty neat.

November 3 rolls around. The US doesn’t hold elections; something else happens instead.

46 of the 50 states introduce nearly identical resolutions in their legislatures. The other four follow later in the week. These resolutions ask Congress to propose the No Confidence Amendment and pre-emptively ratify it.

After all, if an amendment can be ratified 200 years after its proposal, why not 2 months before? But just in case, the resolutions also commit to ratifying it again after Congress proposes it.

A couple of states quickly pass the resolution, and another couple just as quickly reject it. Elections are scheduled for December 1, with the military providing armed presence at each polling station to defend against external threats from our enemies, of course. ICE graciously offers to temporarily suspend all its other operations and provide joint support. Three more states pass the resolution. None reject it.

December 1 comes and goes. The vote results are nonsensical and absurd. Widespread election fraud is suspected, but nothing is ever proven. On December 3, both houses of Congress surprise the world by introducing a joint resolution to propose the No Confidence Amendment, exactly as written.

It’s a protest move, of course; no votes are scheduled, and few members of Congress are willing to comment on it. Nonetheless, it has an effect; five more states ratify No Confidence within the week, bringing the total to 10, with 3 now opposing.

It isn’t just national news anymore; it’s international. The world is holding its breath, as it did during the Brexit vote. Two more states ratify, and every news site now features a widget on its front page reading No Confidence: 12/38.

Your state isn’t one of them. Your friend reaches out to you. She’s so glad you introduced her to UTW back in October, because it gave her a purpose exactly when she needed one. She asks if you would be willing to call your state rep and state senator, and she gives you the phone numbers. It takes you about fifteen minutes.

Two days later, your state joins the list of supporters, bringing the total to 18. Two days after that, something unbelievable happens:

The Senate passes the No Confidence resolution, 99 in favor and 0 opposed.

One news article discusses the other times the Senate has recorded a 99-0 vote, including most recently in May 2026, when the Senate forfeited its pay during government shutdowns, and the one that accepted the ratification of the 27^th Amendment in 1992.

Practically every day brings news of another state ratifying No Confidence or, rarely, rejecting it. The House continues to deliberate, but one Representative gives a statement to the press saying that if and when his state ratifies the No Confidence Amendment, he will support its proposal in the House, but not a moment before. Three days later, his state passes ratification.

A news organization conducts a poll of Americans and releases the results: 80% support No Confidence and 5% oppose. The House passes the resolution as the number of ratifying states crosses 30, officially proposing the amendment once the writing is clearly on the wall. It’s the final act of the outgoing Congress before the new one is seated.

So far, ten states have rejected the No Confidence Amendment, but 35 have ratified it.

The President posts on social media that No Confidence is an illegal conspiracy and that he won’t comply with it, no matter what. The remaining five states ratify No Confidence the very next day, bringing the total to 40.

It won’t happen exactly like this, of course.

There’s an infinite number of possibilities for what Congress might decide to do, how the states might decide to respond, and what the current administration might do to antagonize the people, believing itself invulnerable. If it were easy, we would have done it already.

The founders of our country wrote Article V of our Constitution so that if our government ever became intolerable, we could change it without having to shed any more blood.

America goes through long stretches of history when we forget this power we were given, and we’ve been in this one for 55 years now. As Lepore puts it: “Article V is a sleeping giant. It sleeps until it wakes, and then it roars.”

55 years isn’t the longest the giant has slept. The 12^th Amendment was ratified in 1804, and the 13^th Amendment was ratified in 1865, 61 years later.

The critical point is that there is one and only one ingredient required for this plan: overwhelming public support. No Confidence can’t be stopped by elections going the wrong way, or even by elections being suspended altogether. As long as we are willing to fight and our numbers continue to grow, we can keep pushing it forward.

Next Time

You know what the skeptics are missing now: it’s that no amendment we’ve proposed in the past several decades has been able to secure the support of more than half of the American people.

La Excepción

¿Y qué hay de 1992? Ese fue el año en que se ratificó la Enmienda XXVII. ¿Por qué no se considera que eso supone “enmendar la Constitución de forma significativa”?

La Enmienda XXVII, conocida como la Enmienda sobre la Remuneración del Congreso, es muy clara: establece que, si el Congreso aprueba una ley para concederse un aumento salarial, dicho aumento no podrá entrar en vigor hasta después de las siguientes elecciones. En otras palabras, los votantes tienen la oportunidad de manifestar su descontento antes de que el Congreso vea ni un solo dólar.

Bastante obvio, ¿verdad? La razón por la que no se trata de un cambio “significativo” es que, aunque se ratificó en 1992, se propuso en 1789.

No, no es un error tipográfico. La Enmienda XXVII formaba parte de la Declaración de Derechos original propuesta por el primer Congreso, pero no se ratificó al mismo tiempo que las diez más populares. Aquel primer Congreso no estableció un plazo para la ratificación, como han hecho todos los más recientes, por lo que podría ratificarse incluso hoy, a pesar de tener dos siglos de antigüedad.

En cuanto a Watson: su profesor presentó más tarde un formulario de modificación de nota, cambiando oficialmente su calificación a una A+. Es la única que ha otorgado la Universidad de Texas; su escala habitual solo llega hasta la A.

La Lección

La política no es una máquina. No basta con introducir 38 ratificaciones en la ranura y esperar a que salga una enmienda.

La política son las historias que nos contamos unos a otros.

La historia de la Enmienda XXVII nos dice lo que necesitamos saber: si seguimos al pie de la letra la Constitución y la ciudadanía estadounidense cree en lo que estamos haciendo, la Constitución cambiará.

Una historia de nuestro futuro

Me gustaría contarte ahora una historia, una historia sobre un futuro que quizá no llegue a suceder, pero que no está tan lejos de lo creíble.

Aproximadamente una semana después de que leas este artículo, sale a la luz una noticia. El Gobierno está encubriendo los asesinatos de cada vez más ciudadanos estadounidenses. Entras en Facebook y una amiga tuya está flipando a más no poder. Cree que va a morir, que todos van a por ella, que es solo cuestión de tiempo, que no hay salida.

Además, está arremetiendo contra la gente en los comentarios. Vuestros amigos comunes intentan calmarla, pero razonar con ella no sirve de nada, ni tampoco consolarla. Es imposible tranquilizarla, y tú no estás dispuesto a arriesgarte a que te muerda la cara.

Entonces recuerdas lo que escribí la última vez en “Cómo Puedes Ayudar”. Al fin y al cabo, es tu amiga, así que decides que vale la pena intentarlo. Copias y pegas el último ejemplo que di directamente en una respuesta:

“Sí, es verdad, las cosas están realmente mal ahora mismo. He estado escuchando un podcast llamado Unf*cking The World, y me ha dado esperanzas de que hay una salida a esto.”

Unos treinta minutos más tarde, recibes una notificación de que le ha gustado tu comentario. Vuelves a entrar y ves que no ha respondido a nadie más desde que lo publicaste. Sigue sin responder a ninguna oferta de consejo, ayuda o consuelo, pero al menos ya no está respondiendo mal a nadie. Es un avance.

Al día siguiente, te despiertas y te das cuenta de que ha empezado a publicar enlaces a vídeos de UTW por todas sus redes sociales. Eso sí, por fin ha desactivado el bloqueo de mayúsculas, así que es una mejora indudable.

Vuelves a tu rutina diaria, pero de vez en cuando respondes a cosas en Internet cuando te las encuentras por casualidad. La mayoría de las veces solo es copiar y pegar, pero de vez en cuando escribes algo nuevo y lo añades al archivo de texto que tienes en el escritorio.

Es octubre cuando llega la noticia: la guerra se está recrudeciendo y las elecciones tendrán que posponerse, con fecha por determinar. Tus redes sociales son un torrente de pesimismo procedente de todas partes (excepto por tu amiga de antes, pero básicamente todo el mundo está acostumbrado ya a que publique enlaces de UTW estos días, con distintos niveles de signos de exclamación).

Publicas un par de tus comentarios de “copiar y pegar” para levantar un poco el ánimo, pero no sirven de mucho frente a todos esos gritos. Haces una publicación malhumorada antes de cerrar sesión: “Si de verdad estáis tan enfadados, podríais hacer algo al respecto. UTW.vote, solo digo.”

Tu publicación recibe muchos más “me gusta” de lo que estás acostumbrado, así que la silencias. Sin embargo, la vuelves a compartir cada vez que sale una noticia importante, y consigue otros doscientos “me gusta.” Está muy bien.

Llega el 3 de noviembre. En EE.UU. no se celebran elecciones; en su lugar, ocurre algo más.

46 de los 50 estados presentan resoluciones casi idénticas en sus asambleas legislativas. Los otros cuatro lo hacen más adelante esa misma semana. Estas resoluciones solicitan al Congreso que proponga la Enmienda No Confidence y la ratifique de forma preventiva.

Al fin y al cabo, si una enmienda puede ratificarse 200 años después de su propuesta, ¿por qué no dos meses antes? Pero, por si acaso, las resoluciones también se comprometen a ratificarla de nuevo una vez que el Congreso la haya propuesto.

Un par de estados aprueban rápidamente la resolución, y otros dos la rechazan con la misma rapidez. Las elecciones están previstas para el 1 de diciembre, con presencia militar armada en cada colegio electoral para defenderse de amenazas externas de nuestros enemigos, por supuesto. El ICE se ofrece amablemente a suspender temporalmente todas sus demás operaciones y a proporcionar apoyo conjunto. Otros tres estados aprueban la resolución. Ninguno la rechaza.

Llega y pasa el 1 de diciembre. Los resultados de la votación son ilógicos y absurdos. Se sospecha de un fraude electoral generalizado, pero nunca se demuestra nada. El 3 de diciembre, ambas cámaras del Congreso sorprenden al mundo al presentar una resolución conjunta para proponer la Enmienda No Confidence, tal y como está redactada.

Se trata de una medida de protesta, por supuesto; no hay prevista ninguna votación y pocos miembros del Congreso están dispuestos a comentarla. No obstante, surte efecto: otros cinco estados ratifican la Enmienda No Confidence en el transcurso de la semana, lo que eleva el total a diez, con tres que ahora se oponen.

Ya no es solo una noticia nacional; es internacional. El mundo está conteniendo la respiración, igual que hizo durante la votación del Brexit. Dos estados más lo ratifican, y todas las páginas de noticias mostrarán en su portada un recuadro que dirá No Confidence: 12/38.

Tu estado no es uno de ellos. Tu amiga se pone en contacto contigo. Está muy contenta de que le presentaras UTW allá por octubre, porque le dio un propósito justo cuando más lo necesitaba. Te pregunta si estarías dispuesta a llamar a tu diputado y a tu senador estatales, y te da los números de teléfono. Te lleva unos quince minutos.

Dos días después, tu estado se une a la lista de partidarios, con lo que el total asciende a 18. Dos días después de eso, ocurre algo increíble:

El Senado aprueba la resolución de No Confidence, con 99 votos a favor y 0 en contra.

Un artículo de prensa repasa las otras ocasiones en las que el Senado ha registrado una votación de 99 a 0, incluyendo la más reciente en mayo de 2026, cuando el Senado renunció a su salario durante los cierres del Gobierno, y la que aceptó la ratificación de la 27.ª Enmienda en 1992.

Prácticamente cada día llegan noticias de que otro estado ratifica la Enmienda No Confidence o, en contadas ocasiones, la rechaza. La Cámara de Representantes sigue deliberando, pero un diputado hace unas declaraciones a la prensa en las que afirma que, si su estado ratifica la Enmienda No Confidence —y cuando lo haga—, apoyará la propuesta en la Cámara, pero ni un momento antes. Tres días después, su estado aprueba la ratificación.

Un medio de comunicación realiza una encuesta entre los estadounidenses y publica los resultados: el 80% apoya No Confidence y el 5 % se opone. La Cámara de Representantes aprueba la resolución cuando el número de estados ratificantes supera los 30, proponiendo oficialmente la enmienda una vez que el resultado es ya inevitable. Es el último acto del Congreso saliente antes de que el nuevo tome posesión.

Hasta ahora, diez estados han rechazado la Enmienda No Confidence, pero 35 la han ratificado.

El presidente publica en las redes sociales que No Confidence es una conspiración ilegal y que no la acatará bajo ningún concepto. Los cinco estados restantes ratifican No Confidence al día siguiente, con lo que el total asciende a 40.

Por supuesto, no sucederá exactamente así.

Hay un sinfín de posibilidades en cuanto a lo que el Congreso podría decidir hacer, cómo podrían responder los estados y qué podría hacer la actual administración para ganarse la antipatía del pueblo, creyéndose invulnerable. Si fuera fácil, ya lo habríamos hecho.

Los fundadores de nuestro país redactaron el artículo V de nuestra Constitución para que, si alguna vez nuestro gobierno se volvía intolerable, pudiéramos cambiarlo sin tener que derramar más sangre.

Estados Unidos atraviesa largos períodos de la historia en los que olvidamos este poder que se nos concedió, y llevamos ya 55 años en este. Como dice Lepore: “El artículo V es un gigante dormido. Duerme hasta que se despierta, y entonces ruge”.

55 años no es el periodo más largo que el gigante ha dormido. La Enmienda XII se ratificó en 1804, y la Enmienda XIII se ratificó en 1865, 61 años después.

El punto clave es que solo hay un ingrediente imprescindible para este plan: un apoyo público abrumador. No Confidence no puede detenerse por un resultado electoral desfavorable, ni siquiera por la suspensión total de las elecciones. Mientras estemos dispuestos a luchar y nuestro número siga creciendo, podremos seguir impulsándolo.

Próximamente

Ya sabes lo que los escépticos no tienen en cuenta: que ninguna de las enmiendas que hemos propuesto en las últimas décadas ha logrado obtener el apoyo de más de la mitad de la población estadounidense.

Hoy no hemos llegado a hablar de las cifras de UTW, ni de por qué me dan tanta esperanza; tendré que dejarlo para la semana que viene.

(También estoy experimentando una especie de dilatación del tiempo muy extraña en este momento. Para ti, han pasado dos semanas desde que publiqué mi artículo anterior—quizás incluso menos que eso desde que lo leíste por primera vez. Para mí, han pasado tres meses desde que escribí su texto, sin tener idea de lo que traería el cambio de estación.

(Es muy surrealista estar editando un documento en la misma carpeta, como si fuera la misma Danielle Church que escribió las palabras “No Estás Solo”.)

Un Nuevo Horario Semanal

Antes de seguir adelante, me gustaría anunciar un par de cambios logísticos para Unfucking The World.

En primer lugar, he cerrado el servidor de Discord, el sub de Reddit y el grupo de Facebook. Agradezco mucho a todas aquellas personas que se pasaron por allí, pero algunos lectores muy perspicaces señalaron acertadamente que quizá no fuera una buena idea mantener en ningún sitio una lista centralizada de “personas que están trabajando activamente para ayudar con UTW”. A partir de ahora, puedes seguir a UTW (en Substack, Facebook o Bluesky) y puedes suscribirte a UTW (en Substack, YouTube o una plataforma de podcasts), pero no te voy a pedir que te unas a UTW.

Sin embargo, eso no significa que no vayas a saber nada de mí.

A partir de ahora, Unfucking The World se mudará a un horario semanal, por todo el tiempo que pueda mantenerlo: publicaré un artículo cada sábado a las 12pm Eastern, 9am Pacific, en todos los formatos y en ambos idiomas.

Con mucho, la más común es:

Muy de cerca detrás de esa está

“Sabes que esto nunca tenerá exito, ¿verdad?”

Estas son dos preguntas lo suficientemente importantes como para merecer un artículo completo para ellas mismas; abordaré la primera hoy.

Antes de Empezar: Dos Aclaraciones

Esos no son toda la retroalimentación que he recibido, sin embargo, así que también tengo un par de aclaraciones que hacer. Puedo ser una autora, pero eso no significa que siempre sepa las palabras correctas para decir, y a veces el significado que se transmite no es el que yo pretendía. Considero eso un fracaso de mi parte; mi objetivo es difundir esperanza, no miedo, y si no lo he comunicado correctamente, es mi culpa, no la tuya.

Lo que Entiendo por “Sistema”

En “Qué Hará Falta”, introduje los conceptos de confiabilidad de sistemas y estados de fallo, usando algunos ejemplos de toda la sociedad humana: un DMV, un reloj, y una red eléctrica.

Eso incomodó a algunos lectores, en este mundo donde nuestros trabajos están siendo continuamente reemplazados por máquinas, y en retrospectiva eso era extremadamente predecible.

Ahora que lo pienso, ojalá hubiera aclarado que no todos los sistemas son hechos por el hombre, y que no todos los sistemas tienen una función—algunos, como nuestro Sistema Solar, simplemente son.

Sin embargo, no se me ocurrió, así que solo me queda pedir disculpas por la incomodidad causada y esforzarme por hacerlo mejor la próxima vez.

Lo que Entiendo por “Riesgo”

El otro desliz de mi parte que me gustaría señalar es de “Acción De Censura”; mencioné que es poco probable que los legisladores estatales apoyen la ratificación de la Enmienda No Confidence, especialmente ahora, porque sería “demasiado arriesgado”.

Realmente debería haber aclarado el tipo de riesgo del que estaba hablando aquí.

El riesgo no es para el público estadounidense, sino para los legisladores mismos.

Los últimos meses antes de una reelección son un momento extremadamente vulnerable para cualquier político; es un período de tiempo lo suficientemente corto como para que una decisión impopular aún esté fresca en la mente de los votantes cuando vayan a las urnas, y eso podría destruir una carrera política.

Por mucho que a él personalmente le gustaría ayudarnos, por mucho que crea en los principios de No Confidence, actuar sin el apoyo visible y público de su circunscripción podría acabar con su propio sustento, y no le pediré eso a nadie.

Esta es una de las formas en que el sistema disuade a nuestros legisladores de actuar, incluso cuando ello redundaría en nuestro propio beneficio. Esa cultura de cautela e inacción no es un fenómeno aislado. Como escribe el historiador L.C. Francis:

“Lo que estamos presenciando es un profundo cambio estructural. La Cámara de Representantes, originalmente encargada de defender ferozmente nuestra libertad, ahora opera con una pasividad silenciosa mientras el poder ejecutivo erosiona constantemente los cimientos de la Constitución.

“Los datos cuentan una historia que es difícil de ignorar. En 2023, los funcionarios electos promulgaron menos de 100 leyes, mientras que las agencias federales emitieron más de 3,000 reglas. Ese desequilibrio golpea el núcleo del gobierno representativo. Reemplaza la elaboración de leyes con la administración y desplaza la autoridad lejos de aquellos responsables ante el pueblo.”

Visto desde esa perspectiva, nuestro actual Congreso estancado no es un sistema fallado; es el sistema funcionando según un nuevo diseño.

Nuestro actual sistema político está configurado para elegir un Congreso en punto muerto; la evidencia de eso es que consistentemente lo ha hecho.

No podemos desatar este nudo usando un sistema diseñado para apretarlo; debemos tomarlo y desarmarlo nosotros mismos.

Cómo Arreglamos las Cosas

Por eso nuestro primer objetivo es construir apoyo para No Confidence, y basado en la respuesta que he visto a UTW hasta ahora, está bien dentro de nuestro alcance.

Pasé el mes de junio aprendiendo qué funciona y qué no para incorporar a nuevas personas, y resulta que es realmente fácil, debido a que la mayoría de las personas han estado desesperadamente esperando que algo como esto apareciera.

Todo lo que tienes que hacer es estar dispuesto a ofrecerles esperanza a las personas.

Aquí es como yo lo he estado haciendo.

Tres Pasos: Acordar, Compartir, Informar

Todos los días, navego por mis redes sociales y busco a alguien expresando desesperación sobre el estado de la política estadounidense, ya sea en relación con el Presidente, o el Congreso, o la Corte Suprema, o cualquiera de la gran maquinaria política en este país.

Nunca he tenido ningún problema en absoluto en este paso.

Una vez que encuentro a alguien que está desesperando de que las cosas mejoren, o frustrado por no poder hacer nada, publico una respuesta pública para esa persona, como sea apropiado para la plataforma.

En esa respuesta hago tres cosas:

1. Acordar

Primero, encuentro algo con lo que estar de acuerdo.

Esta parte no es difícil, pero es importante; todos están sintiendo el dolor de vivir en y/o lidiar con este país, pero la mayoría de nosotros en Estados Unidos fuimos criados en un entorno de política partidista, de pensar en otros estadounidenses como nuestros enemigos.

El partidismo nos metió en este lío; no servirá para sacarnos.

En este momento, no importa de quién es la culpa de que hayamos llegado aquí; importa que las cosas ahora están peor que nunca.

Así que cuando estoy de acuerdo con él, digo con qué estoy de acuerdo, tanto para su beneficio como para cualquiera que lea el intercambio, y no menciono ningún partido político ni ideología.

Alguien que se queja de los jueces conservadores en la Corte Suprema se está quejando de que la corte ha sido politizada en primer lugar, cuando siempre se prometió que sería políticamente neutral.

Cualquiera que no pueda soportar cómo Trump está pisoteando nuestros derechos, instituciones y tradiciones está molesto porque el Congreso ha fallado completamente en su deber de defender la nación y la Constitución de un Presidente desleal.

Si nada más, una cosa en la que todos están de acuerdo es que el Gobierno de EE.UU. debería ser más responsable ante sus ciudadanos que solo dejarnos elegir el menor de dos males cada par de años.

2. Compartir

Segundo: después de estar de acuerdo con él en que hay un problema, comparto lo que estoy haciendo personalmente para abordarlo.

“Lo sé, es horrible cómo la Corte Suprema puede hacer lo que quiera sin que nadie los controle. Por eso estoy reuniendo apoyo para una Enmienda que permitirá al pueblo estadounidense expulsarlos.”

“Tienes toda la razón, nuestro sistema electoral nunca nos dará un Congreso que realmente se preocupe por los estadounidenses. Estoy ayudando a iniciar un movimiento llamado Unfucking The World que finalmente nos permitirá cambiarlo.”

“Sí, no se puede permitir el Presidente siga haciendo lo que está haciendo. La Enmienda No Confidence que estoy ayudando cortará su mandato, una vez que podamos obtener suficiente apoyo para ratificarla.”

O incluso solo:

“Sí, es verdad, las cosas están realmente horribles ahora mismo. He estado escuchando un podcast llamado Unfucking The World, y me ha estado dando esperanza de que tenemos una salida de esto.”

No lo estoy diciendo lo que deben hacer; eso básicamente nunca funciona con los estadounidenses.

No lo estoy diciendo que esta es la única forma de avanzar; demostrablemente no lo es.

Todo lo que estoy diciendo es que veo el mismo problema que él ve, y que estoy haciendo activamente algo al respecto, ahora mismo.

3. Informar

La tercera y última cosa es que lo hago saber cómo puede encontrar más información, si quiere involucrarse, para que no tenga que preguntarlo directamente.

El shortlink UTW.vote es útil para esto, al igual que el enlace UTW.vote/explainer que lleva al texto sobre No Confidence, pero a veces soy enlazar directamente a uno de los artículos o videos de UTW que explica más sobre el tema en cuestión.

Otras veces solo comparto el nombre de Unfucking The World, y que está disponible tanto en YouTube como en podcast.

Depende en gran parte de la plataforma en la que esté.

La clave, he descubierto, es dejarlo abierto y no pedir retroalimentación directa.

Ahora mismo no es el mejor momento para ser político como estadounidense, ya sea en línea o en persona, y por eso tengo cuidado de evitar preguntarles a las personas qué están dispuestos a apoyar, incluso retóricamente.

“¿No quieres vivir en un país donde…?” pone a la gente a la defensiva.

“Yo preferiría vivir en un país donde…” hace que la gente empatice.

Casi nunca recibo respuestas a estos comentarios—pero cada vez que escribo uno, uno o dos suscriptores más se inscriben en UTW.

Tú también puedes hacer esto.

Una vez al día más o menos, cuando te sientas en tu mejor momento y listo para lidiar con el mundo, ve a buscar algo de oscuridad en línea.

Cuando la encuentres, comparte solo un poco de luz. Solo un comentario, de dos o tres oraciones de largo.

Recuerda que cuando hagas eso estás escribiendo no solo para esa una persona, sino para cualquiera que vea lo que escribiste, incluso si son demasiado tímidos para hablar.

Si la persona a la que estás respondiendo no está de acuerdo contigo o duda de ti, ¡déjalos! Ser una de las pocas personas en Internet dispuestas a decir públicamente “No tienes que estar de acuerdo conmigo, está bien” hará que tus opiniones se destaquen de la multitud básicamente en todas partes.

Si no eres el tipo de persona que se involucra con las redes sociales, también puedes hacer esto en persona.

Son los mismos tres pasos:

Solo una vez al día, todos los días que puedas reunir la energía para hacerlo.

Un Pequeño Poco de Esperanza

Puede parecer improbable, frente a todo lo que está saliendo mal en 2026, que algo tan pequeño—solo tú trayendo un pequeño poco de esperanza al día de una sola persona, mientras nuestro país de cientos de millones se desmorona a nuestro alrededor—pueda posiblemente marcar una diferencia a una escala lo suficientemente grande como para cambiar las cosas.

Admitiré que yo misma tuve problemas para creer eso antes de lanzar UTW.

Toda la lógica, el análisis y la intuición del mundo podrían decirme que No Confidence es necesario, que América sí quiere esto, pero simplemente no tenía ningún número para respaldarlo.

Mi amigo, tú eres quien me trajo esos números, y por eso estoy agradecida más allá de las palabras.

Con el tipo de apoyo que demostraste simplemente estando dispuesto a escuchar a alguien de quien nunca habías oído hablar antes, has probado que no solo sí tenemos el tipo de impulso que puede convertirse en un movimiento lo suficientemente poderoso como para remodelar nuestro gobierno, sino que podemos hacerlo más rápido de lo que cualquiera, incluso yo, jamás imaginó.

La Próxima Vez

Advertencia justa, voy a meterme un poco más en los números la próxima vez, pero haré lo mejor que pueda para mantenerlo interesante.

Aparte de eso, hay un otro tipo de retroalimentación que he escuchado unas cuantas veces desde que lancé UTW que supongo que debería abordar.

No me molestaré en repetirlo aquí, porque es una puta demasiado vulgar para Unfucking The World; solo diré que la realidad donde me importara siquiera una fracción de un indicio de lo que alguien quiera llamarme no se parece en absoluto a esta.

Nuestro gobierno se está cayendo a pedazos a nuestro alrededor y la gente piensa que me importan los pronombres.

I hope you’ll forgive me if this is a jarring change in tone; I thought that when I wrote the text of my previous article, it might be the last chance to say anything to you. I had contingency plans for if the response was mediocre; I put a lot of thought into how I could gracefully fade away back into my anonymous corner of the Internet if it turned out no one was listening.

All I can say is that I am so very sorry I underestimated you.

By the time launch week was over, UTW had over a hundred subscribers across all the platforms that track that kind of thing. We crossed the 200 mark within days of launch week ending, the Facebook page has now passed a thousand followers, and it shows no signs of stopping.

The entire production team was astonished by the strength of your response.

“Thank you” seems insufficient, but for lack of anything better: thank you!

(I’m also experiencing a very strange kind of time dilation right now. For you, it has been two weeks since I posted my previous article—perhaps even less than that since you first read it. For me, it has been three months since I wrote its text, having no clue what the turning of the season would bring.

(It’s very surreal to be editing a document in the very same folder, as though I were the very same Danielle Church who wrote the words “You Are Not Alone”.)

A New Weekly Schedule

Before I get any further, I’d like to announce a couple logistical changes for Unfucking The World.

First, I’ve shuttered the Discord server, Reddit sub, and Facebook group. I very much appreciate those folks who did poke their heads in, but some very insightful readers correctly pointed out that it would perhaps be a bad idea to keep a centralized list of “people who are actively working on helping with UTW” anywhere.

From now on, you can follow UTW (on Substack, Facebook, or Bluesky), and you can subscribe to UTW (on Substack, YouTube, or a podcast platform), but I’m not going to ask you to join UTW.

That doesn’t mean you won’t be hearing from me, though.

Starting now, Unfucking The World will be moving to a weekly schedule, for as long as I can manage it. I’ll post one article every Saturday at 12pm Eastern, 9am Pacific, in all formats and both languages.

It’s going to be a bit rocky to start—the video for this very episode won’t be going up for a few more days, and neither will the Spanish version—but I’ll do my best to keep to that cadence.

That’s enough logistics, though. Last time I asked for questions, and you’ve certainly had plenty since we launched!

By far the most common is:

“What can I do? No, actually, specifically, what can I personally do?”

Coming up very closely behind that:

“You know this will never work, right?”

These are both important enough to merit a full article each. I’ll tackle the first today.

Before We Begin: Two Clarifications

That’s not all the feedback I’ve gotten, though, and so I also have a couple of clarifications to make.

I may be an author, but that doesn’t mean I always choose the right words. Sometimes the meaning that comes across isn’t the one I’d intended.

I consider that a failure on my end. My goal is to spread hope, not fear. If I haven’t communicated that properly, it’s my fault, not yours.

What I Mean by a “System”

In “What It Will Take”, I introduced the concepts of systems reliability and failure states, using a few examples from across human society: a DMV, a wall clock, and an electric power grid.

That made some readers uncomfortable, in this world where our jobs are continually being replaced by machines, and in retrospect that was extremely predictable.

In hindsight, I wish I’d clarified how not all systems are manmade, and not all systems even have a function—some, like our Solar System, simply are.

It didn’t occur to me, though, and so I’ll just apologize for the discomfort and work on doing better next time.

What I Mean by “Risk”

The other slip-up on my part I’d like to call out is from “No Confidence”; I mentioned that state legislators would be unlikely to support ratification of the No Confidence Amendment, especially now, because it would be “too risky”.

I really ought to have clarified the type of risk I meant.

The risk is not to the American public, but to the legislators themselves.

The last few months before a re-election are an extremely vulnerable time for any politician. That’s a short enough window that an unpopular decision will still be fresh in voters’ minds when they go to the polls, and that could destroy a political career.

As much as they might personally like to help us, as much as they might believe in the principles of No Confidence, acting without the visible, public support of their constituencies could destroy their very livelihood, and I won’t ask that of anyone.

This is one of the ways the system discourages our legislators from acting, even when it would be to our best interests. That culture of caution and inaction is not an isolated phenomenon. As historian L.C. Francis writes:

“What we are witnessing is a profound structural shift. The House of Representatives, originally tasked with fiercely defending our liberty, now operates with quiet passivity as the executive branch steadily erodes the Constitution’s foundation.

“The data tells a story that is difficult to ignore. In 2023, elected officials enacted fewer than 100 laws, while federal agencies issued more than 3,000 rules. That imbalance strikes at the core of representative government. It replaces lawmaking with administration and shifts authority away from those accountable to the people.”

When viewed from that perspective, our current stymied Congress is not a failed system. It is the system working according to a new design.

Our current political system is set up to elect Congress that is at loggerheads; the evidence shows that it has consistently done so.

We cannot untie this knot with a system designed to tighten it; we must take hold of it and pick it apart ourselves.

How We Fix Things

That’s why our first goal is to build support for No Confidence, and based on the response I’ve seen to UTW so far, it’s well within our grasp.

I spent the month of June learning what does and doesn’t work to bring new people onboard. It turns out it’s really easy, because most people have been desperately waiting for something like this to come along.

All you have to do is be willing to offer people hope.

Here’s how I’ve been going about it.

Three Steps: Agree, Share, Inform

Every day, I poke around on my social networks, and I look for someone expressing despair about the state of US politics, whether that’s about the President, or Congress, or the Supreme Court, or any of the big political machinery in this country.

I’ve never had any trouble with this step.

Once I find someone who is despairing of things getting better, or frustrated about not being able to do anything, I post a public reply to them, appropriate for the platform.

In that reply I do three things.

1. Agree

First, I find something to agree with.

This part isn’t hard, but it is important. Everyone is feeling the pain of living in and/or dealing with this country, but most of us in America were raised into an environment of partisan politics, of thinking of other Americans as our enemies.

Partisanship got us into this mess. It will not serve to get us out.

Right now, it doesn’t matter whose fault it is that we got here. It matters that things now are worse than they’ve ever been.

So, when I agree with them, I say what it is I’m agreeing with, both for their benefit and for anyone else who reads the exchange, and I don’t mention any political party or ideology.

Someone who is complaining about conservative Justices on the Supreme Court is complaining that the court has been politicized in the first place, when it was always promised to be politically neutral.

Anyone who can’t stand how Trump is riding roughshod over our rights, institutions, and traditions is upset that Congress has utterly failed in its duty to defend the nation and the Constitution from a disloyal President.

If nothing else, one thing that everyone agrees on is that the US Government should be more accountable to its citizens than just letting us pick the lesser of two evils every couple years.

2. Share

Second, after agreeing with them that there’s a problem, I share what I’m personally doing to address it.

“I know, it’s awful how the Supreme Court gets to do whatever they want without anyone keeping them in check. That’s why I’m gathering support for an Amendment that will let the American people throw them out.”

“You’re absolutely right, our electoral system will never give us a Congress that actually cares about Americans. I’m helping start a movement called Unfucking The World that will let us finally change it.”

“Yeah, the President can’t be allowed to keep doing what he’s doing. The No Confidence Amendment I’m helping with will cut his term short, once we can get enough support to ratify it.”

Or even just:

“Yeah, it’s true, things are really awful right now. I’ve been listening to a podcast called Unfucking The World, and it’s been giving me hope that we’ve got a way out of this.”

I’m not telling them what they must do; that basically never works on Americans.

I’m not telling them that this is the only way forward; it’s demonstrably not.

I’m not mentioning either political party, because that will get people on both sides angry, and anger won’t help us yet.

All I’m saying is that I see the same problem they see, and that I’m actively doing something about it, right now.

3. Inform

The third and final thing is I let them know how they can find out more, if they want to get involved, so they don’t have to come right out and ask.

The UTW.vote shortlink is handy for this, as is the UTW.vote/explainer link to the No Confidence text, but sometimes I’ll link directly to one of the UTW articles or videos that explains more about the topic in question.

Other times, I just share the name Unfucking The World and say it’s available both on YouTube and as a podcast.

It depends in large part on what platform I’m on.

The key, I’ve found, is to leave it open-ended and not ask for direct feedback.

Right now is not the best time for being political as an American, either online or in person, and so I’m careful to avoid asking people what they are willing to support, even rhetorically.

“Don’t you want to live in a country where…?” gets people defensive.

“I would rather live in a country where…” gets people to empathize.

I almost never get replies to these comments—but every time I write one, another one or two subscribers sign up for UTW.

You can do this too.

Once a day or so, when you’re feeling at your best and ready to deal with the world, go look for some darkness online.

When you find it, share just a little bit of light. Just one comment, two or three sentences long.

Remember when you do that you are writing not just to this one person, but for anyone who happens to see what you wrote, even if they’re too shy to speak up.

If the person you’re replying to disagrees with you or doubts you, let them! Being one of the vanishingly few people on the Internet willing to publicly say “You don’t have to agree with me, that’s okay,” will make your opinions stand out from the crowd basically everywhere.

If you’re not the kind of person that engages with social media, you can do this in person too.

It’s the same three steps:

Just once a day, every single day you can scrounge up the energy to do it.

A Tiny Bit Of Hope

It might seem implausible, in the face of everything going wrong in 2026, that something so tiny—just you bringing a tiny bit of hope into one single person’s day, as our country of hundreds of millions falls apart around us—could possibly make a difference on a big enough scale to change things.

I’ll admit that I had trouble believing that, myself, before I launched UTW.

All the logic, analysis, and intuition in the world could tell me that No Confidence is needed, that America does want this, but I just didn’t have any numbers to back it up.

My friend, you are the one who brought me those numbers, and for that I am grateful beyond words.

With the kind of support that you demonstrated simply by being willing to listen to someone you’d never heard of before, you’ve proven that not only do we have the kind of momentum that can build into a movement powerful enough to reshape our government, we can do it faster than anyone, even I, ever imagined.

Next Time

Fair warning, I’m gonna get a little more into the numbers next time, but I’ll do my best to keep it interesting.

Aside from that, there is one other type of feedback I’ve heard a few times since I launched UTW which I suppose I should address.

I won’t bother to repeat it here, because it’s a little too vulgar for Unfucking The World. I’ll just say that the reality where I cared even a fraction of an inkling what anyone wants to call me bears absolutely zero resemblance to this one.

Our government is falling to pieces around us and people think I care about pronouns.

Please.

As I write this article, the date is April 7, 2026. Donald Trump has just committed an unforgivable act of terrorism, threatening an entire nation with obliteration. Social media has erupted; there are calls for impeachment, there are calls for the Vice President to invoke the 25^th Amendment, there are calls for soldiers to refuse orders to commit war crimes.

Everyone is calling for someone else to do something.

I understand the impulse. The world is so much bigger than you or me; when something this awful happens, it feels like there’s nothing we can do about it. All the real decisions get made by people with more power, with more money, or with more connections than us, and it seems like all you or I can hope is that we make enough noise to get their attention and maybe change their minds.

This is an optical illusion. It is one of the cruelest tricks the twenty-first century has played on the minds of the human race, and I wish I could do more to stop it than simply teaching you how to defend yourself from it.

Have you ever taken a long trip somewhere, but when you finally arrive at your destination it feels like you’re still traveling? My grandmother used to say that “your body gets there first but your spirit takes a little while to catch up,” and as with most old sayings, there’s a lot of truth in there if you know how to look.

To start, the physical explanation. When you travel, you put your body under stress. When you ride a moving vehicle, even as a passenger, your body is constantly making minute adjustments to compensate for how the seat moves under you. It’s part of what’s known as “travel fatigue,” and it can leave you feeling stressed and exhausted after a long day on the road, even if all you’ve been doing is sitting still.

Then there’s the mental exhaustion. Our brains are constantly taking in sensory information from outside and filtering it out for us, before it even reaches the level of our conscious awareness. For autistic people like me, that filter can sometimes be a bit faulty, but we all have one; we started building it from the moment we emerged into this blinding, deafening, overwhelming world, when all we could do was scream.

As adults, we don’t even notice the filter, most of the time; it’s a part of our brain structure that’s deeper and older than the need for conscious thought. When we’re in a familiar environment, like our home or office, it excels; most everything around us, it has already seen and categorized as the known, and so the filter doesn’t need to let it through. That’s where the “invisible corner” of mess in your closet (or at least in mine) comes from; you’ve already seen it, you know it’s there, it hasn’t changed, so it doesn’t even enter your awareness when you open the door.

When you travel, your senses are constantly being bombarded by new and different information. The further you go from home, the more unfamiliar your surroundings, and so the more your filter will let things past, into your conscious awareness. Part of the allure of travel, for those who enjoy it, is that you can literally see more of the world when you’re away from the familiar. The cost of all this additional information, though, is paid in mental energy. In short: travel fatigue.

That’s all well and good for the physical and biochemical explanation, but there’s more to it than that, as there always is with humans. We are greater than just the sum of our parts; I don’t care if you call it your spirit, or your soul, or your ineffable consciousness that no science can pinpoint, but each of us has a fundamental sense of self, beyond simply our name, our shape, and our skills. That self, that spirit, has an inertia to it; it isn’t geographical, though, it’s conceptual.

We humans aren’t very good at adapting to fundamental change, despite being orders of magnitude better at it than most of the species we see around us. We form an image of ourself in our head, and it becomes as much part of our “familiar environment” as the invisible corner in the bedroom closet. We grow comfortable with ourselves, with the picture of who we are inside.

When you set off on a journey to a new place (and not just on the commute to work), you are making a fundamental, if temporary, change to your view of yourself. You are no longer a person in a routine; you are now a traveler. Your old sense of self slowly and gently subsides as you drive, or walk, or ride, out of your home environment; you might start your journey by running through a mental list of all the things you did before leaving home, and you might think about the food still in the fridge when you pass your local grocery store; but by the time you’ve made it to the next town over, you are now a person thinking about the path you’re taking and where it will lead you. A traveler.

When you reach a destination you’ve never been to before, there is no similar chance to gradually bring yourself back from that fundamental alignment of spirit before you arrive. One moment you are a traveler; the next you are no longer traveling. The change is imposed from outside rather than from inside, and it jars your sense of self until you have a chance to adjust.

My grandmother said it much more succinctly, of course: your body gets there first, but your spirit takes a little while to catch up.

The cruel trick of the twenty-first century is a little bit about traveling, and it is a little bit about that fundamental sense of self, and it is a lot about that subconscious filter that I was talking about seven or eight paragraphs ago.

The most important thing to remember is that our brains are doing the best they can. They’re made out of genetic structures dating back millions of years, survival instincts dating back tens of thousands, and societal norms going back centuries, and on top of all that, they have to remember that glowing rectangles are some of the most important objects in the entire world. What I’m saying is, be gentle with them; they weren’t designed for this.

Of all the differences between the world everyone alive today grew up in, versus the world that the overwhelming majority of humans who ever lived grew up in, our range is the one that seems hardest to adjust to, in my experience and observation. If you’d lived in pre-industrial times, you might suffer travel fatigue like we do today, but you’d never experience jet lag; it simply wasn’t possible to travel far enough, fast enough to disrupt your body’s natural rhythms.

You also never knew what was going on a country away, except in the most general terms like “at war with.” You rarely knew what was going on even a town away, and the only time the outside world made an impact on your life was when it intruded physically on your hometown, whether in the form of armies, tax collectors, travelers, or the natural world.

Thus, there were only ever two kinds of conflict you had to concern yourself with, in those times: conflicts between neighbor and neighbor, and conflicts between your town and the outside world. The first kind of conflict is part of the human condition; wherever there are people, we will squabble with each other. Though these conflicts might grow vicious, even bloody, they remained small. It was easy enough for you to see where the conflict started and understand its scope, even if there might have been a debate about exactly who it was that started it.

The other kind of conflict, in-town versus out-of-town, was one where you always knew who your allies were. They might not have been able to help you—a swarm of locusts would devour everyone’s crops equally—but they would understand, and they would commiserate. Everyone around you shared the same context you did, and you saw them, if not every day, then every month at least.

Humans are social creatures. We derive stability and safety by staying in community with each other, and we have for tens of thousands of years. All of our instincts tell us to band together in the face of danger, and they also tell us when the danger is too great to face, even all of us together. Way down at the level of that automatic filter, your brain gives you an estimate of how many people stand with you, whenever you find yourself in need of allies.

It truly is amazing how we have adapted to the twenty-first century. Where we could once only make community with people who live nearby, we can now form groups with people who live further away than most people travel in a lifetime. The deep, old parts of our brains are perfectly happy to treat a profile picture and a username as a close, trusted friend, just as well as they might the smiling face of your next-door neighbor.

People can only hold so many “neighbors” in their head at once, though. When a community grows larger, either in geographic size or digital population, we necessarily end up only being able to personally remember a smaller and smaller fraction of them, either individually or as a statistic.

Do you see it, reader? We get our news from across the entire globe. We are exposed in lurid detail to conflicts greater than any of us can imagine, and in the back of our minds we’re comparing the entire amount of us we’ve ever met in our whole lives with the number of them we see day-to-day in the news, and we come up short. Like the farmer with the locusts, each of us knows in the deep place in our hearts that we are on our own against this onslaught. Doomscrolling is only one side-effect of that.

I’ve never had much luck staying away from the news, myself. Even when I try and focus on other things, the state of the world always looms in the back of my mind; it colors all my emotions over the course of the day. When I do focus on it, the scale of the injustice in this world is so great it makes me feel utterly, completely insignificant.

I can’t pretend, even to myself, that the greater happenings in our world are anything less than a nightmare. What I remind myself instead, every time the task ahead seems insurmountable, is that whenever I act in any way, it is not only my strength that I act with. Whenever I make a decision, it is not only me that makes that decision; it is also the uncountably many others in this world who think as I do, whom I may never meet but who came to the same conclusion I did, for the same reasons. My cohort.

When I was in the industry, I got to see firsthand how marketing executives divide the public into cohorts, how each and every view someone might hold an opinion on can be expressed as a percentage of how many of what type of population agree. Even the “individualist” crowd is a cohort—a very lucrative one, for a certain kind of market.

I find that archetype to be especially common among us Americans; it demands we each strive to be utterly unique, to be as different from others as we possibly can be, to be singular shining stars in the universe. Perhaps others find more fulfillment in that than I do; personally, I find it comforting to know that, simply due to the sheer number of humans in the world, it is a statistical certainty that there are many, many other people who want the same things I do, who hold the same values important.

Take care, however; once you truly understand that your actions count for more than yourself, it can be tempting to punish yourself too harshly for your inactions and your failures. Please resist the impulse. When you come home after your second shift of the day and all you can do is collapse in front of the TV, give yourself that room to collapse. Prioritize yourself when you need to, and know that when you do so you are not just taking care of yourself, you’re taking care of every member of your cohort. Build your energy up so that when the day comes for us to speak for ourselves, we can do so with a voice like no one has ever heard. Stay safe, reader.

Stay safe.

This will be the last article of Unfucking The World that I publish, for a little while. As I write these words, I have not yet published even the first; I have no way to know what kind of reception UTW has enjoyed by the time you’re reading this. I can only suspect the size of my cohort, among those of us who are ready to do the work and make a change; realistically, though, I expect the response has fallen into one of two broad categories.

In the first and most likely, UTW has achieved some minor popularity. There are a few comments under each article, maybe even as many as a couple dozen. The online community has attracted some members, but most are inactive; some people find my ideas compelling, and some think they’re dangerous, but by and large, most treat UTW as an addition to the online discourse, and nothing more. America might want change, but we no longer have the strength to reach out and grab for it.

Or.

In the second response, America has decided that enough is enough. Maybe the comment sections are as tame as they are above; maybe they’ve become a flurry of activity, with people debating points back and forth. The real difference, though, is the community. It is growing past just a few people with questions into a dedicated group of people from both sides of the aisle who are willing to take action: to make phone calls, to send emails, and to walk up and speak with people in person, to gather the support we need to make our will into a reality.

I have to ask for your help now, reader. I have done my best to show you my vision for our future, but you can see better from where you are, now, on the day you’re reading this, than I can from here in the past. How does it look? Have you and I spoken? I hope so. I hope I’ve gotten to speak with each and every person who wants to take the world and demand that it change to suit us, instead of always the other way around.

The next chapter of Unfucking The World will be written not in words but in action. I’ll still publish articles, but not as often; I hope to be spending most of my time making things happen and helping you do the same. Parte del atractivo de viajar, para quienes lo disfrutan, es que literalmente puedes ver más del mundo cuando te alejas de lo familiar. El costo de toda esta información adicional, sin embargo, se paga en energía mental. En resumen: fatiga de viaje.

Todo eso está muy bien para la explicación física y bioquímica, pero hay más que eso, como siempre lo hay con los humanos. Somos más que la simple suma de nuestras partes; no me importa si lo llamas tu espíritu, o tu alma, o tu conciencia inefable que ninguna ciencia puede precisar, pero cada uno de nosotros tiene un sentido fundamental de sí mismo, más allá simplemente de nuestro nombre, nuestra forma y nuestras habilidades. Ese yo, ese espíritu, tiene una inercia; no es geográfica, sino conceptual.

Tu viejo sentido de ti mismo se desvanece lenta y suavemente mientras conduces, caminas o viajas fuera de tu entorno habitual; puedes comenzar tu viaje repasando mentalmente una lista de todas las cosas que hiciste antes de salir de casa, y puedes pensar en la comida que todavía está en el refrigerador cuando pasas por tu supermercado local; pero para cuando llegas a la siguiente ciudad, ahora eres una persona pensando en el camino que estás tomando y hacia dónde te llevará. Un viajero.

Cuando llegas a un destino en el que nunca has estado antes, no hay una oportunidad similar de traerte gradualmente de vuelta de ese alineamiento fundamental del espíritu antes de llegar. Un momento eres un viajero; al siguiente ya no estás viajando. El cambio se impone desde afuera en lugar de desde adentro, y sacude tu sentido de ti mismo hasta que tienes la oportunidad de ajustarte.

Mi abuela lo dijo mucho más sucintamente, por supuesto: tu cuerpo llega primero, pero tu espíritu tarda un poco en alcanzarlo.

El truco cruel del siglo veintiuno tiene un poco que ver con viajar, y tiene un poco que ver con ese sentido fundamental de sí mismo, y tiene mucho que ver con ese filtro subconsciente del que hablaba hace siete u ocho párrafos.

Lo más importante que hay que recordar es que nuestros cerebros están haciendo lo mejor que pueden. Están hechos de estructuras genéticas que datan de millones de años, instintos de supervivencia que datan de decenas de miles de años, y normas sociales que se remontan a siglos, y encima de todo eso, tienen que recordar que los rectángulos brillantes son algunos de los objetos más importantes en todo el mundo. Lo que estoy diciendo es: sé gentil con ellos; no fueron diseñados para esto.

De todas las diferencias entre el mundo en el que creció todo el mundo vivo hoy, versus el mundo en el que creció la abrumadora mayoría de los humanos que alguna vez vivieron, nuestro rango es el que parece más difícil de ajustar, en mi experiencia y observación. Si hubieras vivido en tiempos preindustriales, podrías sufrir fatiga de viaje como nosotros hoy, pero nunca experimentarías jet lag; simplemente no era posible viajar lo suficientemente lejos ni lo suficientemente rápido como para alterar los ritmos naturales de tu cuerpo.

Tampoco sabías lo que estaba pasando en un país lejano, excepto en los términos más generales como “en guerra con”. Rara vez sabías lo que estaba pasando incluso en un pueblo lejano, y la única vez que el mundo exterior impactaba tu vida era cuando se entrometía físicamente en tu pueblo natal, ya fuera en forma de ejércitos, recaudadores de impuestos, viajeros o el mundo natural.

Por lo tanto, solo había dos tipos de conflicto con los que tenías que preocuparte en aquellos tiempos: conflictos entre vecino y vecino, y conflictos entre tu pueblo y el mundo exterior. El primer tipo de conflicto es parte de la condición humana; dondequiera que haya personas, nos pelearemos unos con otros. Aunque estos conflictos pudieran volverse viciosos, incluso sangrientos, permanecían pequeños. Era bastante fácil para ti ver dónde comenzaba el conflicto y entender su alcance, incluso si podía haber debate sobre exactamente quién lo inició.

El otro tipo de conflicto, el del pueblo contra el exterior, era uno en el que siempre sabías quiénes eran tus aliados. Puede que no pudieran ayudarte —un enjambre de langostas devoraría las cosechas de todos por igual—, pero entenderían y te acompañarían en tu pesar. Todos a tu alrededor compartían el mismo contexto que tú, y los veías, si no todos los días, al menos todos los meses.

Los humanos somos criaturas sociales. Derivamos estabilidad y seguridad al permanecer en comunidad unos con otros, y lo hemos hecho durante decenas de miles de años. Todos nuestros instintos nos dicen que nos unamos frente al peligro, y también nos dicen cuándo el peligro es demasiado grande para enfrentarlo, incluso todos juntos. Muy abajo, en el nivel de ese filtro automático, tu cerebro te da una estimación de cuántas personas están contigo, cada vez que te encuentras necesitando aliados.

Realmente es asombroso cómo nos hemos adaptado al siglo veintiuno. Donde antes solo podíamos formar comunidad con personas que vivían cerca, ahora podemos formar grupos con personas que viven más lejos de lo que la mayoría viaja en toda una vida. Las partes profundas y antiguas de nuestros cerebros están perfectamente felices de tratar una foto de perfil y un nombre de usuario como un amigo cercano y de confianza, tan bien como podrían tratar la cara sonriente de tu vecino de al lado.

Incluso el grupo de los “individualistas” es una cohorte —una muy lucrativa, para cierto tipo de mercado.

Encuentro que ese arquetipo es especialmente común entre nosotros los estadounidenses; exige que cada uno se esfuerce por ser completamente único, por ser tan diferente de los demás como sea posible, por ser estrellas brillantes singulares en el universo. Quizás otros encuentren más realización en eso que yo; personalmente, me resulta reconfortante saber que, simplemente debido al enorme número de humanos en el mundo, es una certeza estadística que hay muchas, muchas otras personas que quieren las mismas cosas que yo, que consideran importantes los mismos valores.

Sin embargo, ten cuidado; una vez que realmente entiendes que tus acciones cuentan por más que tú mismo, puede ser tentador castigarte demasiado duramente por tus inacciones y tus fracasos. Por favor, resiste el impulso. Cuando llegas a casa después de tu segundo turno del día y todo lo que puedes hacer es derrumbarte frente a la televisión, date ese espacio para derrumbarte. Priorízate a ti mismo cuando lo necesites, y sabe que cuando lo haces no solo estás cuidando de ti mismo, estás cuidando de cada miembro de tu cohorte. Over the past four articles, I’ve done my best to show you my vision for our future, to explain how it works, and to convince you that of all the ways we could react to everything that’s going on in the world right now, this one gives us the chance to actually make our voices heard, in a real, lasting way. I hope I’ve gotten through to you, at least a little, that this is not just a fantasy, and that this isn’t just words on the Internet.

You might have noticed, though, that while I’ve been talking quite a bit about the No Confidence Amendment I drafted, I haven’t shared its actual text with you yet. That changes now; along with this article, I’ve posted both the current draft of the text and an explainer that lays each point out in plain language.

I lay no claim to being perfect. I can see the corruption in our government, and I can see what it will take to free ourselves from it, but I’m only one person, and I can’t see everything—I need your eyes, too, reader. Please look over the explainer and think about what it will mean to you. Imagine how your state might implement Restricted Elections; I’ve done my best to ensure that there is no way to bias the outcome and still meet the requirements, but I’ll be a lot happier if I have you and everyone else to check my work.

If you have a legal background, please check the draft text as well; is there anything that I or my reviewers have missed that might cause problems or delays? We’re trying something very new here already, and if I’ve missed sanding down any of the rough spots, any amount of friction could be enough to keep us from achieving our goal.

In order to make No Confidence a part of our Constitution and unfuck US politics, we need the legislatures of thirty-eight of the fifty states to agree that it’s a good idea. We need them to agree that things are so bad right now that it is worth trying to do something that we’ve never tried before. That magic number is our target. If we make it to 38 ratifications, we win. History changes course; the future grows brighter. The work continues, of course, because there’s so much else that needs unfucking, but we will have taken a solid first step towards a better world.

The flip side of that coin, of course, is that it only takes thirteen states to block No Confidence. Only thirteen states have to decide that doing something like this, especially now of all times, right before midterm elections, is just too risky—and we lose our chance. If we were to put the question of ratification to them now, on the day I post this article, I fully expect all of them would decide that.

We’re going to change their minds. We’re going to do that before the question gets put to them as a whole, before they have to take a public stance one way or another, before they’ve even gotten word that a new Amendment to the Constitution is on the table. We’re going to let each and every one of our representatives in the state legislatures know that No Confidence is coming, and that when the question is put to them later this year, they must support it, or they will lose the confidence of their constituents.

Did you know, that of the 7,386 seats in the legislatures of the fifty United States, all but around 800 of them are up for re-election this November?

So there’s our first goal, reader, and we’ve only got a few months to do it in. We need to till the fields and sow our seeds now, if we’re to have any chance of them sprouting in time to help us. You and I can’t do it on our own, of course, but we have help—everyone else who subscribes to Unfucking The World also wants a brighter future for us all. We may not agree on anything else besides that, but that’s enough.

I can’t possibly come up with a strategy comprehensive enough to sway enough people in this country to make No Confidence a reality by November, but thankfully, I don’t need to. You know your community better than I do, reader. What is important to them? What can you say to your neighbors that will make them enthusiastic for No Confidence?

We could never have managed something like this in the eighteenth century, nor the nineteenth nor even the twentieth, but this is the twenty-first. Your online connections allow you to spread the word from community to community, skipping all across the United States and beyond, completely unbound by geography; your in-person connections allow you to build support within your community, until your voice is loud enough that those you’ve elected to represent you have no choice but to listen. Until our voices are loud enough that every single state legislator knows that when the question is finally asked of them, they must say yes without hesitation.

Now I have a question for you, reader, and I want you to take some time to think carefully about it. Consider the shape of your life, right now, today. Think about your obligations and your opportunities, about where you go to have fun and what you do to wind down. Where does No Confidence fit in that tapestry? What kind of energy can you bring to our fight, without spending so much of yourself that you don’t have enough left for the rest of your life? The point of community is that no person should ever have to shoulder a burden heavier than they can carry, and that goes for activism just as much as for labor.

Maybe you have just a little bit of energy, here and there, but your schedule is completely packed. You can help. Reach out to your friends online; post on your socials; chat with your coworkers on your lunch break. Tell them about No Confidence yourself, if you like; if they’re as enthusiastic for a change as you are, they’ll be delighted to hear the good news from you. If politics isn’t something you feel like talking about, then just tell them about Unfucking The World. Let them come to their own conclusions.

Maybe you have a little bit of free time on your days off, and you want to devote some of your time to doing something worthwhile. You can help. Print out flyers, if you have the means; spread the word amongst your community where you live. Walk outside; say hi to your neighbors, and give them the good news that this horror show is finally about to end. Call your state legislators and tell them you support the No Confidence Amendment, and that you expect them to do the same when it’s time.

Maybe you, like me, have reached the point where not doing anything hurts more than anything else. You can help, I promise. Join one of the online communities organizing for No Confidence, or start your own; I’ve started a couple myself, but I can’t possibly organize everything on my own. Start a local activist group in your community. Set up a meeting to speak with your state legislator in person; print out one of the No Confidence explainers to bring along, since they probably won’t have even heard of it yet. Tell them in your own words why we need this change so badly.

Maybe you don’t have anything to spare, and even reading this newsletter feels like a stretch. You are already helping. No political movement in world history has ever attempted to gain so much support as quickly as we must, to show the politicians how serious we are. In order to do that, we must demonstrate to the algorithms how serious we are, so that they start spreading the word themselves. In short: we must go viral. Even if all you can do is subscribe to the newsletter and hit the like button, you are making a difference in our fight. You are doing enough.

Never doubt that we will face opposition, and not just from those who have something to gain from the existing corruption in our government. No Confidence is a drastic step, the likes of which have never been seen in our country’s history, and I don’t blame anyone for being nervous about it upon first encountering the idea. I’ve done my best to help you understand both why it’s necessary and what makes it our best option; I’d like to think that the fact that you’re still reading means I’ve succeeded, at least a little.

We can do this, reader. We have only seven thousand minds to change, and there are so many more of us than there are of them. The strategy is simple: we each ask our state legislators to support No Confidence. If they say no, we go and talk to our neighbors and we bring them on board, and then we ask again. If they continue to say no, when we bring more and more people to tell them that we need this? Well then, by that point we’ll have enough people this November to replace them with someone who will listen.

And if you are a state legislator, reader? First off, thank you. You do so much of the work every day that actually keeps our country running smoothly, and you do it without the fame and prestige that come along with being elected to Congress. Our country works best when all of its powers are balanced, and we’re seeing the effects now of what happens at the federal level when too much of the power has shifted over to the White House, away from Congress and the courts.

There’s another balance in this country, between the central authority of the Federal Government and the inherent sovereignty of the States, and it has been tipping steadily towards the centralization of power for hundreds of years. It’s time we start dragging the needle back in the other direction. We must remind the Federal Government that its mandate comes from you, and that your mandate comes directly from the people, and we finally have a way to do that.

As long as we have the numbers, the state legislators will be on our side. Their constituencies are small enough, and the bar for entry in running for office is low enough, that they simply can’t afford to ignore a growing movement in their district the way a member of Congress can—not that I expect it would ever come to that. All you need to worry about in order for us to have our victory is spreading the word as far and as fast as you possibly can: it’s finally time.

I’ll be working on the other half of the equation, because that is a job that one person can do. The states can’t amend the Constitution on their own; the amendment must be proposed in order to be ratified, and that task requires the cooperation of Congress.

Would you like to know what I was best-known for, reader? Back when I was an architect, when I was the last resort before my company lost millions of dollars? I told you before that I was good at finding the answers to any technical problems that came along, but it went beyond that. Other people at my company knew as much about our software as I did, but I could explain problems like no one else could.

Time and time again, I was called into meetings with CEOs, CTOs, executives, and finance officers, and the pattern was the same each and every time: their voices would start out hostile, suspicious, uncertain. (This was before Zoom let us see everyone’s faces during teleconferences.) I would answer every single question they had, and I would explain why our solution was the best option for them in particular, and why whatever problem they’d been worried about wasn’t going to impact their bottom line. And every single time, once I was finished, the voices I heard were all warmth and relief. It was one of my very favorite parts of that job, hearing the relief in a person’s voice when someone made a problem they were worrying about disappear in front of their eyes.

What every single one of those executives wanted was reassurance that the decisions they had made, or were making, or were going to make, were good ones, choices that would help their company thrive. They were nervous, thinking that if they worked with us, they wouldn’t have access to the expertise and support they needed, when anything went wrong. All they needed was to see that we, as a company, could handle anything that went wrong—so I showed them that, even in the worst-case scenario, I could pinpoint what was broken, fix the immediate problem, and commit on the spot to ensuring that it would never fail in that way again. I could do that, because I had expertise, and I had confidence, and I had the reputation and influence that came from being a top architect at my company, which I’d spent years and years building.

I still have the confidence. I still have the expertise—the particular domain I worked in was software, but the skills I developed were more generic than that. They allow me to look at a system, any kind of system, and see how it should work when things are going right, and where the most likely points of failure are, and what types of vulnerabilities it must be cautious of. The one thing I lack is the reputation; they have no reason to listen to me.

You are my solution, reader, and I will do everything in my power to be yours. As long as our numbers continue to grow, you will be giving my voice more weight; you will make it impossible for them to ignore me when I knock on their doors. When I tell them about the change that is coming, how they are vulnerable to it, and what they can best do to protect themselves, your presence behind me in that room will give them no choice but to take me seriously. When the words “No Confidence” grace the front page of every newspaper in the country, they will know that the time has finally come, and their only choice is whether to help us themselves or be replaced by someone who will.

I promise you, reader. You deliver me the States, and I will deliver you Congress. It might take a week to gather that kind of support; it might take months; it might require us to follow through on our intentions to vote against our state legislators in November. (I have the easy job. A member of Congress who stands against the will of their State does not last long in Congress; I only need to remind them of that.) There are only two questions left to be answered, and I can’t answer them without your help:

How loud will our voice grow? And, how long will it take us to grow it?

I have one more bit of wisdom to share with you, but it’s going to take a little while to explain, so I’ll leave that for next time.

Use everything I’ve shared with you, and come up with ideas of your own for how to promote UTW. Make flyers. Record videos. Write songs. Get your neighbors involved. I’ll highlight the efforts of the community at UTW.vote, so that you can see you aren’t alone.

Contacta con tus amigos en línea; publica en tus redes sociales; charla con tus compañeros de trabajo en tu pausa para el almuerzo. Tal vez tengas un poco de tiempo libre en tus días de descanso y quieras dedicar parte de tu tiempo a hacer algo que valga la pena. Puedes ayudar. No Confidence es un paso drástico, como nunca se ha visto en la historia de nuestro país, y no culpo a nadie por ponerse nervioso al encontrarse por primera vez con la idea. He hecho todo lo posible por ayudarte a entender tanto por qué es necesario como qué lo convierte en nuestra mejor opción; me gustaría pensar que el hecho de que sigas leyendo significa que lo he logrado, al menos un poco.

Podemos hacerlo, lector. Solo tenemos que cambiar siete mil mentes, y hay muchos más de nosotros que de ellos. La estrategia es sencilla: cada uno de nosotros le pide a sus legisladores estatales que apoyen No Confidence. Si dicen que no, vamos y hablamos con nuestros vecinos y los incorporamos, y luego volvemos a preguntar. Si siguen diciendo que no, cuando traigamos a más y más personas para decirles que necesitamos esto… bueno, para entonces ya tendremos suficientes personas este noviembre como para reemplazarlos con alguien que esté dispuesto a escuchar.

¿Y si eres un legislador estatal, lector? En primer lugar, gracias. Haces gran parte del trabajo todos los días que realmente mantiene a nuestro país funcionando sin problemas, y lo haces sin la fama y el prestigio que conlleva ser elegido para el Congreso. Nuestro país funciona mejor cuando todos sus poderes están equilibrados, y ahora estamos viendo los efectos de lo que sucede a nivel federal cuando demasiada parte del poder se ha desplazado hacia la Casa Blanca, lejos del Congreso y los tribunales.

Hay otro equilibrio en este país, entre la autoridad central del Gobierno Federal y la soberanía inherente de los Estados, y ha estado inclinándose constantemente hacia la centralización del poder durante cientos de años. Es hora de que empecemos a arrastrar la aguja en la otra dirección. Debemos recordarle al Gobierno Federal que su mandato proviene de ti, y que tu mandato proviene directamente del pueblo, y finalmente tenemos una forma de hacerlo.

Mientras tengamos los números, los legisladores estatales sí estarán de nuestro lado. Sus distritos son lo suficientemente pequeños y el umbral para postularse a un cargo es lo suficientemente bajo como para que simplemente no puedan permitirse ignorar un movimiento creciente en su distrito de la forma en que puede hacerlo un miembro del Congreso; no es que espere que alguna vez llegue a eso. ¿Te gustaría saber de qué era más conocida, lector? Cuando era arquitecto, cuando era el último recurso antes de que mi empresa perdiera millones de dólares. Te dije antes que era bueno encontrando respuestas a cualquier problema técnico que surgiera, pero iba más allá de eso. Otras personas en mi empresa sabían tanto sobre nuestro software como yo, pero yo podía explicar los problemas como nadie más podía.

Una y otra vez, me llamaban a reuniones con directores ejecutivos, directores de tecnología, ejecutivos y oficiales de finanzas, y el patrón era el mismo cada vez: sus voces comenzaban hostiles, sospechosas, inseguras. (Esto era antes de que Zoom nos permitiera ver las caras de todos durante las teleconferencias). Yo respondía cada una de sus preguntas y explicaba por qué nuestra solución era la mejor opción para ellos en particular y por qué cualquier problema que les preocupara no iba a afectar su resultado final. Y cada vez, una vez que terminaba, las voces que escuchaba eran todo calidez y alivio. Estaban nerviosos, pensando que si trabajaban con nosotros no tendrían acceso a la experiencia y el apoyo que necesitaban cuando algo saliera mal. Todo lo que necesitaban era ver que nosotros, como empresa, podíamos manejar cualquier cosa que saliera mal; así que les mostré que, incluso en el peor de los escenarios, yo podía identificar qué estaba roto, solucionar el problema inmediato y comprometerme en el acto a asegurar que nunca volvería a fallar de esa manera. Todavía tengo la confianza. Todavía tengo la experiencia; el dominio particular en el que trabajaba era el software, pero las habilidades que desarrollé eran más genéricas que eso. Mientras nuestros números sigan creciendo, le estarás dando más peso a mi voz; harás que sea imposible para ellos ignorarme cuando llame a sus puertas. Cuando les hable del cambio que viene, de cómo son vulnerables a él y de qué pueden hacer mejor para protegerse, tu presencia detrás de mí en esa sala les dará no más remedio que tomarme en serio. Cuando las palabras “No Confidence” aparezcan en la portada de todos los periódicos del país, sabrán que finalmente ha llegado el momento y su única elección será si ayudarnos ellos mismos o ser reemplazados por alguien que lo haga.

Te lo prometo, lector. Tú me entregas los Estados y yo te entrego el Congreso. Reunir ese tipo de apoyo podría tomar una semana; podría tomar meses; podría requerir que cumplamos con nuestra intención de votar en contra nuestros legisladores estatales en noviembre. I mean it. You bring something unique to the world that has never existed before and will never exist again after you’re gone. You are the sum total of your heritage, your upbringing, your experiences, and your dreams, and no one in the world can exemplify that particular combination as well as you can.

Sappy, I know, but in this case also literally true, at least by the metric I use to gauge reality. You don’t have to share my views on whether it is literally, morally, or spiritually true, but I hope you’ll at least consider this as a useful lens to view the world through.

I can’t tell you why life exists in our universe, which is what people usually mean when they discuss the “meaning of life”—I’ll leave that to the philosophers and the priests. What I can tell you is why you might want to see life in a universe, if you had one to play around with.

Imagine yourself a researcher some fantastic distance into the future, where we have the ability to simulate entire universes, down to the microscopic scale. Why would you choose to simulate life developing in your little pocket universe instead of something interesting, like galaxies colliding, or black holes eating nebulae, or astronomically huge crystalline rock formations?

You would choose life in specific if what you wanted was to try as many different possibilities as you could, all at once. All life tends to diversify; a species tends to set itself apart in a way that lets it become the best at filling its ecological niche, and an individual tends to set itself apart from its species in a way that makes it more successful than its peers.

As a researcher, you might use that tendency to breed microbes that can eat nuclear waste, a process that could take millions of years in the real world. So you seed your pocket universe with microbes that eat every type of thing you can think of. You allow them to breed, and mutate, and diversify, as all life will, and once there are enough of them, billions and trillions and quadrillions of individuals, the chances that at least one of them has the combination of genetics, environment, stimulus, and drive that you need are basically one hundred percent.

All you need to do is make sure you don’t miss these individuals when they pop up. You fill your little test universe with lots of tasty little nuclear poops, and you keep a careful eye on them as you run the simulation. Once you start to see them disappearing, you can just pause the simulation and see what’s doing it, and there are your microbes, with genetic code that you can copy and try in our universe. So long as the ecosystem is healthy enough, you can leave it running for however many millions or billions of simulated years it takes before some lucky microbe finally hits on that magic combination.

I don’t know why life exists in our universe, or even if there is a why. What I do know is that in order to fulfill that purpose, we must all of us find the traits and skills that most truly fulfill us, and we must cherish and nourish them to find the thing that each of us is best suited for doing, over all else. After all, if your lucky nuclear-eating microbe never tried the spicy radiation food just because all the other microbes were busy eating chlorophyll, you’d never even know it existed.

This is why I bear Donald Trump no personal animosity. He is an execrable miscreant; he is being the best damn execrable miscreant he can be. He’s doing it right. He’s exemplifying the wealth he came from and the awful personality he was presumably born with, and I would expect no less.

As I said previously: the United States was always going to elect someone like Trump. Our current electoral system selects for the people who can best appeal to the public, which limits the pool to saints and sociopaths. When the country is doing well, the public likes to elect a President who is positive and forward-looking, just like they are in their own lives. When the country is doing poorly, the public likes to elect a President who can tell them who is to blame for their problems.

The whole world is doing poorly. The regulations that currently exist around the global economy are causing wealth to become more and more stratified at a faster and faster rate, and it is causing life to become more and more difficult for the vast, overwhelming majority of people. More and more, people will turn to someone who can tell them who is responsible for the way things are.

That’s why I need you to set aside your pain, just for a moment. If you think that Donald Trump is personally responsible for what is going on, or that Democrats are, or Republicans or immigrants or any other group, then you are missing a very, very great deal of the bigger picture. Our government, itself, has fallen sick. A big part of our strength as a country comes from our ability to maintain continuity even as we change our government out over and over again; now, it is that very continuity that persists the illness. Our legislators no longer have enough political freedom to defend our Constitution from Trump, or to deal with any problem where the desires of the wealthy conflict with the needs of the country.

You don’t ask a surgeon to do surgery on themself, and I personally consider it unconscionable (in addition to being ill-advised and generally unsuccessful) to ask an elected government to change the laws that got it elected in the first place. That becomes an unavoidable conflict of interest, one which the public will always lose; or at least, one where the government is not incentivized to choose the solution that best suits the public’s needs.

This is why we need a second way to elect our government. If we are to remain the United States of America—the nation of the people, by the people, and for the people—then we cannot be a country with just a single electoral process. No matter how fair and good we make it, we will always end up back where we are today, in 2026, because every complex system will eventually enter a failure state it can’t escape without help. We must be a country with two electoral processes: one will be what we use normally, designed to find and elect the best, brightest, and savviest politicians America has to offer. The other, the Restricted Election, is designed to elect the most trustworthy Americans, the ones with the best view of what is actually going on with the country: the working class.

As I mentioned last time, the Interim Government has another control that keeps it honest. Anyone elected to the Interim Government by Restricted Election is forbidden from seeking re-election. No Confidence does not hand America over to a new government, the way you might see if we were conquered by a foreign nation or toppled by a revolution. No Confidence lets us give the existing electoral system a much-needed break. We get to send a bunch of legislative janitors to go in and, with clear incentive and pure motive, make us an electoral system that we can be proud of as Americans, rather than having to cringe every time someone says the words “electoral college.”

And then when they’re done, two years later, we get to try out the brand-new electoral system they created for ourselves. Whoever your favorite legislator is, they’ll be back; anyone truly beloved of their constituency has nothing whatsoever to worry about. Only the legislators who have hung on by electoral trickery will have to worry about their seats.

We don’t have to worry about the Interim Government messing things up for everyday Americans, because the Interim Government will be made up of everyday Americans, ones who will be taking two years (or four, or six) out of their lives to do the hardest thing this country has had to do in 250 years. And when those years are over, they will go back to their everyday lives, and they will want those lives—and the lives of their family, and their friends, and their community—to be as good and healthy as possible.

And when they’re done and the new Congress gets elected, they will get seated in a (conceptually) brand-new Capitol, still with that fresh new-government smell, and they will have so much more capacity to do good work for this country, and for the world, than they have today.

You might not believe that the world is teetering on the edge of disaster, but you don’t need to. If you turn around and look away from the scary you’ll see that the world is poised at the threshold of freedom, and we as Americans just have to be brave enough to make the leap. The technology of the twenty-first century has given us what we need, to be able to make this happen: the ability to take a single voice and magnify it into a thousand, into a million, and fire it off as a single shot that will echo around the globe and resound through the closed doors of our legislatures.

We have nothing to lose from No Confidence—our government has already failed us. We have everything to gain; not just for ourselves, but for our children and grandchildren and for everyone else.

I know hope is in short supply these days, but if you can find any between the couch cushions, now is the time to scrounge it up. No Confidence gives us a way out. Not just a way to fight back; a way to truly birth a new era for our society, one in which we, the People, are truly in control of our own destiny.

Lo que sí sé es que para cumplir ese propósito, todos nosotros debemos encontrar los rasgos y habilidades que más verdaderamente nos cumplen, y debemos apreciar y nutrirlos para encontrar la cosa para la que cada uno de nosotros está mejor preparado para hacer, por encima de todo lo demás. Después de todo, si tu microbio afortunado comedor de nucleares nunca hubiera probado la comida de radiación picante solo porque todos los otros microbios estaban ocupados comiendo clorofila, nunca sabrías siquiera que existía.

Es por esto que no le guardo ninguna animosidad personal a Donald Trump. Es un miserable execrable; está siendo el mejor maldito miserable execrable que puede ser. Lo está haciendo bien. Está ejemplificando la riqueza de la que proviene y la horrible personalidad con la que presumiblemente nació, y no esperaría menos.

Como dije anteriormente: los Estados Unidos siempre iban a elegir a alguien como Trump. Nuestro sistema electoral actual selecciona a las personas que mejor pueden apelar al público, lo que limita el grupo a santos y sociópatas. Cuando el país va bien, al público le gusta elegir a un Presidente que sea positivo y con visión de futuro, justo como ellos lo son en sus propias vidas. Cuando el país va mal, al público le gusta elegir a un Presidente que pueda decirles quién tiene la culpa de sus problemas.

Todo el mundo va mal. Las regulaciones que existen actualmente alrededor de la economía global están causando que la riqueza se vuelva más y más estratificada a un ritmo cada vez más rápido, y está causando que la vida se vuelva más y más difícil para la vasta, abrumadora mayoría de las personas. Cada vez más, las personas se volverán hacia alguien que pueda decirles quién es responsable de la forma en que son las cosas.

Es por eso que necesito que dejes a un lado tu dolor, solo por un momento. Si piensas que Donald Trump es personalmente responsable de lo que está pasando, o que los Demócratas lo son, o los Republicanos o los inmigrantes o cualquier otro grupo, entonces te estás perdiendo una parte muy, muy grande del panorama más amplio. Nuestro gobierno, en sí mismo, se ha enfermado. Una gran parte de nuestra fuerza como país proviene de nuestra capacidad para mantener la continuidad incluso mientras cambiamos nuestro gobierno una y otra vez; ahora, es esa misma continuidad la que persiste la enfermedad. Nuestros legisladores ya no tienen suficiente libertad política para defender nuestra Constitución de Trump, o para lidiar con cualquier problema donde los deseos de los ricos entren en conflicto con las necesidades del país.

No le pides a un cirujano que se opere a sí mismo, y yo personalmente considero abusivo (además de mal aconsejado y generalmente sin éxito) pedirle a un gobierno electo que cambie las leyes que lo eligieron en primer lugar. Eso se convierte en un conflicto de intereses inevitable, uno que el público siempre perderá; o al menos, uno donde el gobierno no está incentivado a elegir la solución que mejor se adapte a las necesidades del público.

Es por esto que necesitamos una segunda forma de elegir a nuestro gobierno. Si vamos a seguir siendo los Estados Unidos de América —la nación del pueblo, por el pueblo y para el pueblo— entonces no podemos ser un país con solo un único proceso electoral. No importa cuán justo y bueno lo hagamos, siempre terminaremos de vuelta donde estamos hoy, en 2026, porque todo sistema complejo eventualmente entrará en un estado de fallo del que no puede escapar sin ayuda. Debemos ser un país con dos procesos electorales: uno será el que usemos normalmente, diseñado para encontrar y elegir a los mejores, más brillantes y más astutos políticos que América tiene para ofrecer. El otro, la Elección Restringida, está diseñado para elegir a los estadounidenses más confiables, los que tienen la mejor visión de lo que realmente está pasando con el país: la clase trabajadora.

Como mencioné la última vez, el Gobierno Interino tiene otro control que lo mantiene honesto. Cualquier persona elegida para el Gobierno Interino por Elección Restringida tiene prohibido buscar la reelección. No Confidence no le entrega América a un nuevo gobierno, de la forma en que podrías ver si fuéramos conquistados por una nación extranjera o derrocados por una revolución. No Confidence nos permite darle al sistema electoral existente un descanso muy necesario. Conseguimos enviar a un montón de conserjes legislativos para que entren y, con incentivo claro y motivo puro, nos hagan un sistema electoral del que podamos estar orgullosos como estadounidenses, en lugar de tener que encogernos cada vez que alguien dice las palabras “colegio electoral”.

Y luego cuando terminen, dos años después, conseguimos probar el sistema electoral completamente nuevo que crearon para nosotros mismos. Podrías no creer que el mundo está tambaleándose al borde del desastre, pero no necesitas hacerlo. Si te das la vuelta y miras lejos de lo aterrador verás que el mundo está posicionado en el umbral de la libertad, y nosotros como estadounidenses solo tenemos que ser lo suficientemente valientes para dar el salto. La tecnología del siglo veintiuno nos ha dado lo que necesitamos, para poder hacer que esto suceda: la capacidad de tomar una sola voz y magnificarlo en mil, en un millón, y dispararlo como un solo tiro que resonará alrededor del globo y a través de las puertas cerradas de nuestras legislaturas.

No tenemos nada que perder con No Confidence —nuestro gobierno ya nos ha fallado. Tenemos todo que ganar; no solo para nosotros mismos, sino para nuestros hijos y nietos y para todos los demás.

The title of this article doesn’t refer to the mascot of one of the two big political parties in the USA, but this isn’t unrelated to them, either. The concept of two-party politics in the United States has had centuries to entrench itself into our political and electoral system, not to mention our cultural landscape, and it will take a lot more than a single amendment to dig it out.

Here’s the problem, which you may already have thinking been about: even if we remove the current government, where exactly are we supposed to find a better one? The two political parties, Democrat and Republican, have an effective stranglehold on American politics. Regardless of what rules No Confidence might put in place, there is zero doubt in my mind, as there should be in yours, that the state politicians will do everything they can to give their party the best chance to succeed in the elections to come. Even if you ignore the rampant gerrymandering, every state writes their election laws in such a way as to give their party the best chance in the Federal Government. I don’t necessarily even think that’s a bad thing.

No Confidence doesn’t try to take the authority away from the states (as Trump is presently attempting); the states are the ones who will have to ratify the amendment, and that would make it utterly dead in the water. No Confidence is a way to give power back to the states, as so very many small-government advocates have wanted ever since our country’s founding. How, then, can we ignore all of the blatantly anti-voter laws that have been enacted all across the country? They, or laws like them, will color the outcome of every state-run election. Trump isn’t even wrong about that part, and we all know it.

So how do we get fifty incredibly partisan states who are very comfortable in their biases to run fair elections, without infringing on their right to make whatever rules they damn well please? Simple. We don’t give them rules to follow; we give them targets.

No Confidence introduces a new type of election into American politics: the Restricted Election. This is not intended to replace the existing electoral system, and it isn’t the type of elections we’d do going forward, forever; the Restricted Election format is only used to elect an interim government after No Confidence removes the old one. After that, unless the Interim Government passes laws or proposes amendments to change the existing electoral system, we go right back to it in the next election.

The Restricted Election format demands more, of both the states themselves and the American people, than any ballot or referendum we have ever held. We cannot stop the organizations and lobbyists from doing everything they can to bias the results towards their cause; therefore, the Restricted Election requires Americans to raise our voices louder than we ever have before, to drown them out.

That’s why, in a Restricted Election, voting is not just a privilege, it is a responsibility. Every citizen of age is required to vote, and every state is required to do their utmost to assist them. If the deeply partisan states try to play their usual games of making sure only the “right” people get to the polls, they will fall short of the high bar set by a Restricted Election.

The penalty for failing to do a Restricted Election properly after a No Confidence is that the rest of the states who did do it right get to start doing Congress stuff without you. If the deep-blue and deep-red states don’t do everything they can to ensure they run a fair election, they will not be part of the reconstruction of America until they do. Their citizens will have to go and vote again, and again if necessary, before they will have any voice in the Interim Congress.

(I’ll tell you though: if the results of America’s first Restricted Election are that only lawmakers from the swing states end up being seated from the beginning of the Interim Congress session, I can’t really see that as a bad thing.)

The actual text setting out the requirements for a Restricted Election is pretty wordy, but it boils down to three key points:

1. Every citizen votes.

2. Every voter has someone to vote for.

3. Every candidate on the ballot is trustworthy.

Number one is pretty easy. Normal elections in America are voluntary; a Restricted Election is compulsory. Every citizen of age who resides in the state is required to submit a ballot, with no exceptions. No Confidence doesn’t propose or even suggest penalties for citizens who don’t submit a ballot (even a blank abstention ballot, for those citizens who have religious objections to voting); states would be free to enact penalties for not participating in a Restricted Election if they felt the need, but they wouldn’t have to.

Turns out, saying “everyone has to vote” increases voter turnout, even when there are no explicit penalties for non-voting. (Shock, I know.) We even know by how much! Australia had voluntary voting like the US until 1924, and their voter turnout was in the fifty to eighty percent range, just like ours is today. Ever since 1924 voting has been compulsory, and their voter turnout has been over ninety percent.

Therefore, in order to hold a successful Restricted Election, the state must show that they have received a quantity of filled ballots equal to at least ninety percent of their population of resident citizens of age.

The state is permitted to set whatever rules they like; they can require you to show photo ID, or to register a month in advance, or to go to one of just a few polling places. They will simply need to provide enough support to their citizens that at least nine out of ten can make it out to vote at the right time.

Something tells me that all across America it will suddenly and mysteriously become extremely easy for a citizen to vote, at least in the Restricted Election. Much cheaper that way.

That takes care of number 1. Either the state gets close enough to “all citizens voting”, or they have to stay home while the other states get to go to Congress. How about number 2, that everyone should have someone to vote for? How do you ensure the state legislature doesn’t just pack the ballot with people they want to see in Congress?

Well, that comes down to the type of ballots states are required to use. I’m not talking electronic versus paper, I’m talking about “vote for no more than two” versus “vote for at least one.” Compulsory voting has been rejected by America in the past because of conflicts with the First Amendment; by requiring everyone to vote, you’re depriving citizens of their chance to make a political statement by not voting.

No Confidence avoids running afoul of the First Amendment by saying only that every citizen must submit a ballot. In addition, it specifically calls out that a voter may submit a ballot without any votes on it; the specific text is that each ballot may contain votes for “none, any, or all” of the candidates. This makes a Restricted Election a form of approval voting, where voting for one candidate doesn’t harm the prospects for a different candidate.

It also provides the mechanism to guarantee the second of the three criteria, that every voter have someone to vote for. How? Well, the ninety-percent voter turnout requirement counts filled ballots. Specifically, the voter has to have voted for at least as many candidates as are being elected, for their ballot to count towards that ninety percent requirement. States must allow their citizens to submit under-filled or even blank ballots, or else they violate their citizens’ free speech rights (and wouldn’t the ACLU have a field day with that); this means they need for their voters to want to vote for at least as many candidates as they have seats to fill.

(That’s another thing: Restricted Elections don’t even try to address the gerrymandering issue. The state is required to elect all its Senators and Representatives at-large in the Restricted Election. Yes, this does mean that each Californian will have to mark down votes for at least 54 candidates. It’s not quite as bad as it sounds.)

The more effort the state puts towards restricting and biasing its candidate pool, the less likely the voters will be happy with the ballot. Voters do not need to be instructed to avoid voting for people they don’t like; that’s already the expectation. So, if the state holds a Restricted Election but only puts Democrats on the ballot, there’s an approximately zero chance they’ll capture enough Republican votes to hit ninety percent of the electorate.

To avoid that becoming something that an anti-democracy movement could game (by instructing their members to undervote, perhaps), Restricted Elections are also the only elections that accept partial credit. If the state gets at least ninety percent of its citizens to the polls, but each ballot only has four votes on it, then the state sends two Senators and two Representatives to Congress. It will have to hold another Restricted Election to fill the rest of its seats in the House of Representatives.

Give them a target they can’t hit unless they’re actually giving it their all.

Still, though. Even if that accounts for the first two criteria, what about the third? How do you legislate trustworthiness? If there were a reliable way to tell whether someone was trustworthy, there wouldn’t be a need for trust in the first place. How can the states possibly tell if a candidate can be trusted, and how could that possibly be verified after the fact?

I have to credit the Voters Not Politicians movement from Michigan for the inspiration here, for the way they formed their 2020 Congressional redistricting committee. The answer is that you don’t try and figure out whether any given candidate is trustworthy; instead, you pick your candidates from a group that you already know is trustworthy. And how do you do that? Math.

Here’s the thing about trustworthiness: it, like everything else about biological life, exists on a spectrum. Some people are so trustworthy that they could say they need to borrow a thousand dollars of yours today so they can give you a million tomorrow, and they would be telling the truth. Some people are so untrustworthy that they could say the same thing and you’d believe it just as strongly, until they didn’t come back the next day. Most of us, though? Eh, we’ll bend the truth every once in a while if there’s no real harm in it, but we’d never try and cheat someone out of house and home, and even if we tried we couldn’t pull off that level of sociopathy without giving it away.

Our existing electoral system only picks people from the first and second categories. No Confidence exclusively picks people from the third, and here’s how: every person who appears on a Restricted Election ballot must have been chosen randomly from a pool of at least ten thousand, at some point within the ninety days prior. As Michigan discovered thanks to VNP, whenever you choose a random person from a large group, you get…just an ordinary person. Not a saint or an angel, and not someone gaming the system, but just an everyday citizen trying to live their life and make their way in the world. You get someone you can trust. Not an “I know they will tell the truth” type of trust, but an “I’m confident I could tell if they were lying” trust.

There’s still a lot of leeway in how the states enact the requirement, of course. They could call for tens of thousands of volunteers to submit their names, and then put all those names in a hat and pick a dozen out. They could randomly choose one out of every ten thousand citizens on the jury duty roster and send each one a mailing saying “you could be a candidate in the Restricted Election if you want to” and pick the candidates by hand from whoever responds, or whoever gets at least a hundred signatures, or whoever passes the background check.

(I suppose they could even turn it into some sort of reality show if they thought it would increase voter engagement. I’m not saying it’s a good idea, I’m just saying that as long as the candidates went through a random selection process at some point, it doesn’t matter how the campaigns get run, or whether the state allows viewers to vote candidates off the ballot before the election even happens to improve ratings, just so long as the actual Restricted Election they run at the end meets all the criteria. Algo me dice que en toda América de repente y misteriosamente se volverá extremadamente fácil para un ciudadano votar, al menos en la Elección Restringida. Mucho más barato de esa manera.

Eso se encarga del número 1. Como Michigan descubrió gracias a VNP, cada vez que eliges a una persona al azar de un grupo grande, obtienes… solo una persona ordinaria. No un santo ni un ángel, y no alguien que manipula el sistema, sino solo un ciudadano cotidiano tratando de vivir su vida y abrirse camino en el mundo. Obtienes a alguien en quien puedes confiar. No un tipo de confianza de “yo sé que dirá la verdad”, sino un tipo de confianza de “estoy seguro de que podría darme cuenta si estuviera mintiendo”.

Todavía hay mucho margen en cómo los estados promulgan el requisito, por supuesto. Podrían llamar a decenas de miles de voluntarios para que envíen sus nombres, y luego poner todos esos nombres en un sombrero y elegir una docena. Podrían elegir al azar uno de cada diez mil ciudadanos en la lista de deber de jurado y enviar a cada uno un correo diciendo “usted podría ser candidato en la Elección Restringida si quiere” y elegir a los candidatos a mano de quien responda, o quien obtenga al menos cien firmas, o quien pase la verificación de antecedentes.

I want to talk to you about No Confidence today, but I also want to talk to you about distributed systems architecture, a profession obscure enough that most people have never even heard of it. (It is relevant, I promise.) I certainly didn’t understand what it was the first, second, third, or even fifteenth time I asked my father what he did for a living.

Obviously I had to go into the profession for myself. How could I not, when even learning what it meant was such a delightful challenge?

It’s probably easier to comprehend today than it was in the 1980s, of course, since now we’re all plugged into the Internet, the biggest distributed system humanity has ever created save capitalism itself. So there’s your clue for the first part of the name: a distributed system is one that is spread out over a wide area, made up of countless individual components all working in concert.

In the industry, “distributed” means something else, as well. It means that there is no single point of failure, no central authority that everything relies on for its operation. Imagine going in to renew your driver’s license, but instead of taking a number and waiting for it to be called, you go to the first window and tell them why you’re here, and then go to a second window and give them your documentation, and so on and so forth like a bureaucratic fast-food drive-thru.

It might seem like it works more smoothly at first, right up until the first time a person can’t explain exactly what they need to the receptionist. Then everyone has to wait on that interaction to finish before anyone else can get seen.

Reader, if you just had the thought, “well, clearly they should have a few receptionists at that desk, because everyone has to go there first anyway,” then you begin to understand the architecture part of the profession, as well. A distributed systems architect must not only know how the system itself works, they must know how people interact with it, too.

The systems part is the one I find both easiest and hardest to comprehend and define, largely because just about anything can be a system, as long as it’s made up of more than one part. The agonizingly long process to get a driver’s license is a system of people and rules; a wall clock is a system of gears and axles; an electric power grid is a system of generators, transformers, and transmission lines. The only particularly defining feature of a system, as opposed to just a collection of individual things, is that changing one part of a system affects the rest.

When a system is healthy, everything works, well, like clockwork. A new number gets called every few minutes, so you can see yours getting closer and you don’t get too impatient; the hour hand hits a new number exactly as the minute hand hits twelve; another generator spins up and starts producing electricity when the demand goes up in the heat of summer.

The more separate pieces a system has, the more impressive it is when they all work together as designed; who among us hasn’t marveled at a perfectly-synchronized marching band or laughed at a ridiculous Rube Goldberg machine?

Of course, it’s that very ridiculousness that hints at the potential trap of systems. Rube Goldberg’s drawings were so funny because those machines were so much more likely to fail than succeed. A single domino out of place, or a mouse jumping the wrong way, and the machine would not just fail to work, it would become utterly useless.

In systems architecture, we call this a “failure state”: the system can no longer perform its designed function just by relying on the nature of the system itself. If each clerk at the motor vehicle office is working on a particularly long and cumbersome transaction, then the people with quick renewals stop cycling through, numbers stop getting called, and everyone in the building gets more impatient. A misaligned hour hand might hit a new number when the minute hand reaches seven, instead of twelve.

Some failure states aren’t so benign. In February 2021, the electric power grid in Texas suffered catastrophic failures that left millions of homes without power for days, resulting in over two hundred deaths, despite everything the state could do to restore power more quickly. Even that, though, was a fraction of how bad it could have been; if power plant operators hadn’t acted quickly enough to save as much of the grid as they did, the entire state could have lost power, potentially for months.

This is not a hypothetical scenario; this was minutes away from happening. Power plant generators are some of the most phenomenally powerful machines that humanity has produced, and like all of our most powerful inventions, they need to be part of a carefully tended and maintained system or all that power will tear it apart from within. The surest (non-violent) way to destroy a power plant generator is to increase its load past what the system can bear; because power plants represent such a sizable financial investment, all power plants are designed to shut themselves off rather than vibrate themselves to pieces, if the load gets too high.

This overload was state-wide, though, which meant that not just one or two of them but every generator would have shut down. The state would have had to perform a “black start” to restore power to the grid, a process rife with points for potential failure in part because it has never been done before.

Some systems get so complex that we’re not even sure if we can get them running again, if they stop. “Too big to fail” does not mean that they can’t fail; it just means that we’re really scared of what will happen if they do.

This is why the discipline of distributed systems architecture exists. We have learned so much as a species, in between the time when electric power grids were first spreading across North America and now. Dependable systems reliability has become essential for so much of what we do now that the majority of our world runs on the Internet, and the intuitions of yestercentury have become the well-established best practices of today.

One thing we’ve learned the hard way (and proved mathematically, for good measure) is that no system lasts forever. Anything with enough pieces can get into a failure state, and diagnosing and fixing failure states is difficult, costly, and sometimes impossible. Every complex system can get into a failure state it can’t get out of on its own, which means that if you leave it running long enough, then eventually, every complex system will.

This, of course, is where the ubiquitous advice of “Have you tried turning it off and back on again?” comes from. Any electronic device is a system; any system can get into a failure state. If the system is simple enough that you can just start it up again from scratch, then that will always be the easiest way to get it working again.

Some systems, of course, aren’t that simple. So let’s talk about No Confidence.

First off: why the name? It comes from the “motion of no confidence,” a feature of parliamentary governments. In these systems, where the parliament elects the government, the parliament can likewise unelect that government once it no longer has their support. In America, it is we the citizens who elect our government, and thus it must be we, the American people, who raise our voices to tell our government that it has lost our confidence. We no longer have faith that our government will actually do right by us, and that lost faith has real repercussions, and it also has a name, recognized and feared in halls of government the world over: No Confidence.

The No Confidence Amendment doesn’t attempt to solve any of the many problems with American politics directly. Movements have been trying to come up with the best solutions to the various problems that plague our society for longer than I’ve been alive, and one or two have been at least mildly successful, but on the whole American politics resists any efforts to nudge it away from the status quo.

No Confidence makes no attempt to solve those problems, because those are not problems that can be solved by a single person. Instead, it simply addresses the failure state itself. Our government is a complex system that has been operating continuously for two hundred fifty years, and the failure state it has gotten into is not one that our existing electoral system is capable of fixing. Because of how rigid American politics has become, it’s only a very small part of our government, the so-called “swing” or “battleground” states and seats, that actually have a chance of changing in each election. Every part of the government that does not change persists the failure state into the new term.

No Confidence allows the American people to demand a true break from the existing system. It creates a single point in time when we change out every political role in our government—that is, the people who make decisions, not the millions of hardworking government employees who actually keep our country running day-to-day, regardless of which party is holding the reins.

When we ratify No Confidence, we strip every single one of those decision-makers of their authority, along with anyone they placed in a persisting role. We hit “undo” or “pause” on every decision that has been made since the current administration took office, until we have someone we can trust to look over them and decide which were good for the country, and which were not. We guarantee every government employee (both those who have been faithfully executing their roles for years and those whose employment was wrongfully terminated by the current administration) their job and their paycheck, for the interim. We trust these selfless functionaries to keep our country running, just like we trust our brave soldiers to keep our country safe, while we the citizens of the United States do the really hard part.

Only the first of the eleven sections of the No Confidence text describe the above: what happens the moment the amendment becomes part of our Constitution (or when we need it again in another two centuries or so). The other ten describe what we do after we clean house: how we elect an Interim Congress to oversee the cleanup efforts, their role in the reconstruction of America, and the process for returning to a more normal (and, hopefully, more healthy) political system once they’re done.

I’ll go into more detail next time, but again, No Confidence isn’t designed to fix any of our problems itself. When we ratify it, all it will do is leave us with a trustworthy interim government that actually wants to make lasting progress in our country—but even if they don’t, we will have given our existing system enough of a break that the next Congress will have much more political freedom than the one we have now. No Confidence is a way to pick ourselves back up out of the dirt, dust ourselves off, and stagger forward to the starting line.

I wrote No Confidence and designed its ratification strategy to be something we could use in the last of the last resorts. This is not an amendment that you would ever write into your Constitution with a healthy government; it’s only politically viable at a point in history when the vast, typically-apolitical majority of Americans are unable to avoid seeing just how bad things have gotten.

That’s on purpose. No Confidence is an extremely powerful disinfectant; if we allow it to be used just when one group of people doesn’t like what the government is doing, then it will itself become a corruptible part of the system, and it will lose its power. This way, we will only ever—we can only ever—reach for it when the situation is, as it is now, so wrong that everyone can see it.

It also means that if we do attempt to change things slowly and piecemeal by means of midterm elections and legislation, or if someone deposes this administration by means of violence, we will be giving up the option for No Confidence for good, unless and until things get this bad again.

There might still be paths forward for America and the world in that case, but I can’t see them, reader, and I gotta tell you, I’m tired of waiting and hoping that maybe someone comes up with some solution someday in the future. This solution exists now, and it doesn’t require waiting, it requires doing. Now, tomorrow, the next day, maybe skip the one after that if you need a break, but all that No Confidence demands is that you decide, right now, that you want the America of tomorrow to be strong, proud, great, and free.

La parte de sistemas es la que encuentro tanto la más fácil como la más difícil de comprender y definir, principalmente porque prácticamente cualquier cosa puede ser un sistema, cuando esté compuesta por más de una parte. El proceso agonizantemente largo para obtener una licencia de conducir es un sistema de personas y reglas; un reloj es un sistema de engranajes y ejes; una red eléctrica es un sistema de generadores, transformadores y líneas de transmisión. You don’t need me to tell you that, though. If you’re reading this around the time I’m writing it, then you already know how bad it is. I don’t need to know anything about you to know that things have gotten a lot scarier for you over the last several years, worse than they ever have in your life. Prices are going up, jobs are disappearing, wages are stagnating, and our governments can’t seem to do anything to slow that process down. All of us, no matter our position on any political spectrum, are feeling the world spiraling out of control right now.

We don’t all react the same way to that fear, of course: some of us cower in our homes and avoid the news, while some of us grab for whatever control we can find, in whatever context we can find it. Some of us get energized to fight back, while some of us plaster on fake smiles in hopes that pretending the problems don’t exist will make them go away. I’m not here to judge; the fact that we all react differently to danger is part of what makes us strong as humans.

So reader, don’t let anyone, not even you, tell you you’re reacting wrong to the crisis that is the twenty-first century. You are not broken; you are reacting appropriately to a world that is getting more and more dangerous every day, in ways you might not be consciously thinking of but that you can probably feel on the back of your neck. I personally know more than one lifelong pacifist who has decided that now might not be a bad time to own a firearm after all.

What I’m going to ask of you now is difficult, but it is necessary. Our fear responses evolved to react to a world where danger nearly always comes from some other being, either human or animal. When something goes wrong, we intuitively look for who is to blame, who is at fault, because millennia of inherited experience have taught us that to resolve a problem, we must look to its source. Every single one of us has looked across the aisle and seen there the face of The Enemy, and I’m no less guilty of that than you are, I promise.

I need you to let go of that, at least for as long as you’re reading this. You are not wrong to see blame when you look at the people who are making your life miserable, but for right now, you need to allow for the idea that it may be a mirage. You need to convince yourself that the blame you see may actually be in the air between you, in the structure of this world we have created for ourselves, whether you truly believe it or not. If you cannot—if your own pain is so strong that you can’t set it aside, even in the interests of preserving our future—that is okay. Not everyone is made for the fight.

If the previous paragraphs were too soft and hand-holdy for your taste, then perhaps this will be more your speed: I need you to grow the fuck up and get over yourself. If that’s too much to ask, then feel free to see yourself out.

If you’re still here, reader, then I think you want to fix the world as much as I do. You may or may not believe that the situation is quite as dire as I do, but you know things are bad, and you desperately want them to change, even though it feels like nothing possibly ever could.

Unfortunately, the real world rarely provides us with such obvious signposts as yellow paint on climbable surfaces, billionaires who act like literal cartoon villains, or a bright red box labeled “BREAK GLASS IN CASE OF TYRANNY.” Knowing that something is wrong doesn’t mean knowing how to make it better, as the current US administration is so impressively (and illegally) demonstrating.

I don’t know how to fix everything, and even if I did I wouldn’t try; the world that would be ideal for Danielle Church, or for any one single person, would be intolerable to nearly everybody else. That’s why our government is made up of so many different people: differences of opinion make us strong.

What I can do is drag us back from the brink. I can’t fix the world, but I do know how we can unfuck it just enough to where we can all breathe again. I wouldn’t be writing this if I couldn’t see the path we’re going to take to reach for a brighter future.

It won’t be easy, though, and it won’t be possible at all unless we narrow our focus. For now, we can’t be distracted by the loss of jobs to AI, nor by the genocide of trans people in the United States, the atrocities in the Middle East, the war in Ukraine, or worsening financial projections the world over. If we want to give ourselves the best chance for survival in the decades to come, we must focus right now on one thing, and one thing only.

The first step to unfucking the world is to peaceably remove Donald Trump from power and erase his impact on American politics. This holds whether you are American or not, whether you love this country or hate it, whether you wish progress would go faster or slow down just a bit. The United States is, for better or for worse, an exceptional country (in the sense of being an exception) with an outsize impact on the world economy. It is presently at a tipping point in its history, and depending on how the next couple years play out, we will see one of two potential futures come to pass.

In the first future, Trump’s legacy stands. This could take many forms: Trump might hold on to the reins for a third term and beyond; he might die in office, violently or otherwise; he might attempt a coup and fail; he might be taken down by someone else’s coup; he might, I suppose, even leave power peaceably at the end of his term. Regardless of whether or not hell freezes over, these various timelines have one thing in common: Trump’s impact on US politics remains intact. The people he pardoned remain pardoned, the Supreme Court justices he installed remain installed, and the bills he championed remain the law of the land.

Trump’s legacy could also be the destruction of the United States as a country, depending on how this war goes. We’ll see, I suppose.

In any of these futures, America—presuming it still stands—loses any remaining influence (other than military) over global politics. The United States will never be trusted by any other nation, because we will have shown ourselves to have no consistent national identity. We will see more efforts to get sham Presidents into place, and some will be successful, because the rewards for doing so are permanent. Regardless of whether we still technically have elections, the United States will remain, as it is becoming, a fascist state at its core. Even if we elect a string of respectable Presidents after this who just want to balance the budget and keep our own economy going strong, no one will trust Dr. Jekyll when they know that Mr. Hyde will eventually come back.

See, the thing is, what’s going on now isn’t even Trump’s fault, not really. He isn’t even a little bit special. One thing we know from history is that every rule gets tested eventually. The United States was always going to elect a President who didn’t give a shit about the Constitution someday. And that means that we were always going to have this crisis, regardless of if that President was Trump, or Musk, or someone fifty years down the line who hasn’t even been born yet. The fact that this is happening exactly one quarter-millennium into our country’s history brings a nice sense of narrative gravitas to it, but it’s ultimately a coincidence.

If America does fall to tyranny, or if it falls altogether, then the very real economic problems facing the world will be up to everyone else to sort out. America will either be a country that can be bought for money or it will have disappeared altogether; either way, it will be of no assistance in unraveling the mess that is the global economy. I’m not gonna say humanity has no chance at that point, but I really don’t like our odds. (I do have plans for how to unfuck the economy after we’re done here, but one step at a time.)

What happens next in America’s history, though, is and was always going to be up to us Americans. We’re the generations that happen to be alive at the point in time the US is undergoing this inevitable metamorphosis, whether into tyranny or into freedom, and so the responsibility to fix it falls to us.

Because that’s the other future. In that second future, we rise up and say that this is not business as usual. Regardless of whether and where we fit on the liberal or conservative spectrum, we say that having a President who brazenly flouts the Constitution, who openly sells pardons for money, who decides on war plans by consulting a very fancy Magic 8-Ball rather than Congress, is a bridge too far.

In that future, we remove him from power but we go one step further: we rewind, undo, and erase every single thing he did. We can’t unmurder the people he’s had killed, of course, but we can void every Executive Order he’s ever issued, we can annul the pardons he’s sold, and we can remove every crony he’s inserted into positions of power that will remain even after he’s gone. Once he’s out, we can pick and choose what to preserve from the things he did which did help our country, as soon as we can trust the people making those decisions.

In this future, America will have demonstrated that even if the Presidency can be subverted, it won’t bring any lasting benefit to the ones doing the subverting. We will also have made strides towards repairing our reputation with the rest of the world, which is going to be clutch in the decades to come, but most importantly, we will survive.

This can only be done by amending the Constitution. There is no other way to erase his legacy, and therefore, that is the only path forward. If you want to see that future as much as I do, then put all thoughts of midterm elections, of Supreme Court cases, of ICE raids, and of war crimes out of your head; any plan that does not include amending the United States Constitution within the next two years guarantees we get the bad ending.

Today, I’d like to tell you a little bit about the newsletter you’re reading, and about me. Unfucking The World is not a newspaper, and I am not a reporter. I follow current events, of course, and from time to time I might comment on something noteworthy if I feel the existing coverage is missing something, but there are plenty of other people on the Internet talking about things that have already happened in the world.

I’m a lot more interested in where we’re going than where we’ve been, and what I’ve seen has me very, very worried. I worked in the technology sector for over two decades, and it landed me at the very top of the tech support chain; I was the person that even the experts went to when an installation was failing with a multi-million-dollar contract on the line, and I always found the answer.

You don’t treat as many ailing systems as I have without developing some very strong techniques and intuitions for what kinds of things can go wrong when you take millions of individual components, each with their own goals and instructions, and expect them all to work together as a cohesive whole. You begin to see patterns that show up again and again when a system starts to struggle, even when the causes are completely unrelated.

When the COVID pandemic hit and wrecked my health to the point where it ended my career, it left me with a lot of time to step back and take a critical look at how things were going in the world, something my work had never left me with the energy to focus on before. And, given that all software is created by humans, it probably shouldn’t have come as a surprise to me that I saw the same patterns from my professional career popping up in human society, too.

The bad news is, the pattern we’re currently in is terminal. There are some fundamental flaws in our global economy—I’ll go into them in a later article—that will eventually, inevitably, cause it to collapse in its entirety unless corrective action is taken. I don’t think I need to tell you that if the global economy collapses, humanity does not fare particularly well.

I’m not an economics expert. If I were, I could probably tell you how long we have before we need to worry about it; it might be decades down the line, or it might be just a few years away. The equations I’d need to get that kind of specificity aren’t something I ever needed to study in my work, but I’ll tell you, I’m seeing a lot more early-warning signs out there than I’d like.

The good news is, I’ve charted us a course out of this mess. It starts with stabilizing US politics, it moves on to curtail the wasteful spending in the technology sector, and it continues on, someday, to guarantee basic human rights the world over.

Fully none of the steps involve waiting around while politicians decide what will happen with our lives.

Unfucking The World is not a newspaper; it is a verb. It is the will that I am putting out into the world, and I hope you’ll back me when I’m right, and tell me I’m wrong when I’ve missed something. In return, for as long as I’m here, I will spend every bit of energy I can muster guiding us toward ways to turn our dreams into reality.

Hoy me gustaría contarte un poquito sobre el boletín que estás leyendo y sobre mí. Unfucking The World no es un periódico, y yo no soy reportera. Claro que sigo las noticias del día a día, y de vez en cuando comento algo si siento que la cobertura habitual se está perdiendo alguna parte importante, pero hay un montón de gente en Internet hablando de cosas que ya pasaron en el mundo.

Estoy mucho más interesada en hacia dónde vamos que en dónde hemos estado, y lo que he visto me tiene muy, muy preocupada. Trabajé en el sector tecnológico más de veinte años y terminé en lo más alto de la cadena de soporte técnico: era a quien incluso los expertos llamaban cuando una instalación se estaba cayendo con un contrato de varios millones de dólares en juego… y siempre encontraba la solución.

No puedes lidiar con tantos sistemas que se están rompiendo sin desarrollar una intuición bien fuerte sobre qué cosas pueden salir mal cuando juntas millones de componentes, cada uno con sus propios objetivos e instrucciones, y esperas que todo funcione como un equipo. Empiezas a ver patrones que se repiten una y otra vez cuando un sistema empieza a fallar, incluso cuando las causas parecen totalmente distintas.

Cuando llegó la pandemia de COVID y me destrozó la salud hasta el punto de que tuve que dejar mi carrera, me sobró mucho tiempo para dar un paso atrás y mirar con ojos críticos cómo iban las cosas en el mundo, algo que mi trabajo nunca me había permitido antes. Y como todo el software lo hacemos los humanos, la verdad es que no debería haberme sorprendido ver los mismos patrones de mi trabajo apareciendo también en la sociedad.

La mala noticia es que el patrón en el que estamos ahora es terminal. Hay algunos fallos fundamentales en nuestra economía global—los voy a explicar en un artículo más adelante—que, tarde o temprano, van a hacer que todo se derrumbe si no tomamos medidas correctivas. No creo que necesite decirte que, si la economía global se derrumba, a la humanidad no le va a ir nada bien.

No soy experta en economía. Si lo fuera, podría decirte con más precisión cuánto tiempo nos queda antes de que esto se ponga feo; podrían ser décadas, o podrían ser solo unos pocos años. Las fórmulas que necesitaría para calcularlo con exactitud no son algo que haya estudiado en mi trabajo, pero te soy sincera: estoy viendo muchas más señales de alerta temprana de las que me gustaría.

La buena noticia es que ya tracé un camino para sacarnos de este lío. Empieza por estabilizar la política de Estados Unidos, luego sigue con recortar el gasto innecesario en el sector tecnológico y, algún día, llegar a garantizar los derechos humanos básicos en todo el mundo.

Ninguno de esos pasos consiste en sentarse a esperar a que los políticos decidan qué va a pasar con nuestras vidas.

Unfucking The World no es un periódico; es un verbo. Es la voluntad que estoy poniendo en el mundo, y espero que me apoyes cuando tenga razón y me digas que estoy equivocada cuando me equivoque. A cambio, mientras esté aquí, voy a poner toda la energía que tenga para guiarnos hacia formas reales de convertir nuestros sueños en realidad.

El podcast aún no está listo en el momento de la publicación de este boletín, pero podrás suscribirte a él en todas las principales plataformas, además de aquí en Substack.
